I never ordered it because anything American is bad when it comes to stuff like coffee, but basically it's espresso but extra water is at the end to make it roughly the same strength as normal coffee. It tastes much different from regular coffee but it actually works.

I generally don't much care for espresso because it's a bit too bitter, but with more water actually tastes pretty good.

Hot, but I can see how it'd be good cold, too.

The espresso flavor still punches right through even when it's more dilute, but cold would make it less intense I bet

This also happens. If you ask for coffee they bring you an espresso since that's basically all anyone drinks. The mistake Americans make is that they all for a "bigger coffee" so the Barista will just bring out a double espresso instead and they'll drink like 5-6 of them, complain about the price, and then shake like they're on meth and cocaine for the rest of the day.

It's also a point of contention when Italians come to America. A "cappuccino" in Italy is a glass of milk with a shot of espresso mixed in. In America cappuccino is sometimes used interchangeably with "cafe latte" and you get essentially the same problem.

yes, that's what the OP describes.

i like Americanos when there isn't good 'regular' coffee available. so if i go to a SBX and they don't have blonde brewed i get an Americano.

Americanos are also great for sampling different roasts.

The flavor profile is gonna be a bit different from a drip but not that much.
