I used FreeTaxUSA

easy to use and free (no dumb income limits), and i only had to pay for efiling state taxes. i could have sent it in via mail for free i think? either way it was like 12 bucks.

If your taxes are simple, use the free software from the IRS page for the federal taxes. You will need to read instructions but hey, it's free.

I think this one isn't. The other one (AGI) caps at 73,000 irrc. Free Fillable Forms might close for good this October though.

https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/free-file-fillable-forms

A coworker mentioned this to me a week ago and I closed my browser tabs and forgot the names. I think you have to do a separate one for state..

Freetaxusa
This one is legit? It seems like it but I feel really uncomfortable giving my SS ID and them not actually censoring it. It doesn't feel that protected to me...

I would just recommend TurboTax. Pretty easy.

I still use TurboTax. Generally, they let you file for free if you don't wait until the last minute. I think you already missed their free filing period for this year.

I've also seen a lot of CEmen recommending Freetaxusa. I've never used it myself, but it sounds good.

it's gonna be $140 from me from Turbotax (89 for federal and 50 for state). No thanks.

I used freetaxusa and it was nice and painless. I think you need to make under a certain amount for it to be free though.

Just download the pdf forms from the IRS website and fill them out yourself using the instructions. Print them out and mail them in.

I would never, ever, ever use (or, god forbid, pay for) any sort of proprietary software for tax filing. Especially not anything from those bastards at Intuit.

Thats for guided filling. Do it your own there is no threshold and you use free fillable forms: https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

Free fillable forms is pretty much this but on software that IRS recommends.

^ I assume thats because every year your tax situation might change (new job, investments, property, child, etc...). That increases the complexity of your return and the cost of having someone/paid software do it.

Bingo. Not to mention I used to have someone do it and realized I didn't need to, moved to using free software when my taxes were relatively simple, and things aren't as simple now.
