Better setting, better enemy line-up, more item options, not as easy to cheese...

You can't do this in Elden Ring though

It's an apt metaphor, because when I was an angsty teen the first one would have been way cooler, but the older I get the more I relate to the second one.

No weapon durability.

Which really feels like a deliberate "fuck you" after that Miyazaki interview years ago where he said he wanted to avoid the mistakes of BotW when making Elden Ring.

Anyway, Elden Ring is better because I like it more.

While they have a lot of similarities they're not the same games and shouldn't be compared. BotW is heavily focused on exploration with Lynels being the hardest foes you'll meet on average while Elden Ring is focused on combat even if it has a massive open world.

Elden Ring is focused on combat

I always love hearing this kind of opinion because it's the exact opposite of how I view the games.

Elden Ring's focus is on exploration and making that exploration worthwhile.
Whereas BotWs focus is on combat and the different ways you can approach the same encounter with the physics system.

I think that opinion is reinforced by the durability system as well. Combat is a puzzle that's meant to be solved in BotW, in ER it's a stop-gap in exploration.

The heck? The durability exists because they didn't want people relying on the same weapons and wanted them to mix it up (they've said this) while the fights in ER very frequently require you to figure out boss patterns and how to handle with foes in varied situations or else you die. I'd think this obvious considering how many exploration tools (like the climbing gear and Ravali's gale) BotW gives you while ER's got a huge variety of weapons and ER makes it so each fight needs to be approached carefully and even basic foes can lay down a lot of pain if you don't pay attention.

It's not about how much room you have for error.
I'd even argue that you're punished way harder for death in BotW than you are in ER. In BotW you're forced to reload a save and retry whatever you were doing from the same state. In ER you respawn at the nearest Stake of Marika (generally right outside of the "main" encounter in an area) with full health and all healing items restored. Usually in a better state than you were on the previous attempt.

Beyond that, the fact that weapon durability exists in BotW means every encounter is a big deal. You could potentially be faced with an encounter that you aren't equiped to handle due to lack of weapons. Even if you do have some weapons to do it, it's possible you don't have the right weapons to deal with a particular enemy's resistances/immunities.

You're trading a non-renewable resource in order to beat something in BotW. In ER almost everything is infinite or renewable on the spot, and every weapon is the right weapon.
