I'm upgrading from a Galaxy S5 neo which is having brain problems... I did have it for like 6 years

My provider will gives me a nice discount if I buy one of their 'favoured' models; here they are:

  • Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (nope, that's wayyyyyyy to expensive)
  • Samsung Galaxy S22+ (I'm not buying a phone that costs more than my PC)
  • Samsung Galaxy S22 (ehhhhh)
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 (still pricey)

Ok, lets skip all the remaining overbudget ones

  • Samsung Galaxy S21 FE (about $1100 cnd, doesn't seem that bad)
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 (about $1000 cnd, probably ok to just up to the S21) wut, No headphone jack?
  • Apple iphone SE 3rd gen (about 500 cnd) Not sure if I want apple... cuz, like, I'm old from when you couldn't share files between macs and PCs and IDK PHONE
  • Google Pixel 6 (about $1000 cnd) ... ehhh

And, for the free phones if I stay with my provider

  • Galaxy A03S
  • Galaxy A13

I do have a phone comparerer open, but I don't know the stats other than those in common with PCs like cpu and memory... also, even though my S5 Neo is ancient, it has the HIGHEST resolution-DPI of all the phones checked!!! lulz, I think cuz it's smaller.

My phone went into a permanent boot loop the other day and I have no way of contacting the provider; they have a chatbot that can't help me and it's trying to schedule a call from a representative to my inoperable phone.

I'm sick of the smartphone, looking for one that receives calls and texts and nothing else.

What I really want is a physical landline with an external answering machine, but somehow despite it costing the phone company fractions of a fraction of a cent to provide service, it's more expensive then getting a supercomputer that tracks my every movement and utterance.

Based on those options, not including any wildcards I would go with the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE. Not had experience with it personally, but I hear its good, and so are others in this range.

My personal favourite is Google Pixel 6, but I'm biased as I've been using Google Pixels for years now (current phone is the Google Pixel 6 Pro), and its a bit expensive to want to recommend tbh.

Also depends on you need to use the phone for, if its basic, don't require any extra power and such, the Galaxy As you mentioned should do fine in theory. Although the only one I've had experience with is the A20, as a work phone, which runs fine for calls, texts, emails, basic web browsing & using it as a hotspot.

The advantage of the free phones is I can always excahnge them back in

I only use the phone for, like, phoning...

In that case, I would be tempted to go for one of those, and it sounds like if you don't like them you can always change your mind. They look fairly similar to be honest, so I would either plump for which one you like the look of best, or the highest rated one.

After talking with the service rep I was able to get an additional $200 discount as well as a $5 cheaper monthly if I upgrade to the S21

So...looks like I'm getting an S21

Thanks all

I just upgraded from an S5 myself about a month ago. These companies have already been proven to slow down their older devices through new firmware, and mine was so ridiculously slow and prone to crashing that I just plain couldn't do it anymore.

I got an S9 and I'm pretty happy with it so far, except for the fact that the headset controls work differently from any other electronic device I've ever used them on. I can't get a handle on what combination of one, two, or three clicks makes it skip forward/back/pause when playing a video or music, and often it doesn't even work the same way twice in a row.

looks like I upgraded just in time... my current phone is just hemorrhaging battery life. loses like 20% an hour.

I know this can be fixed with just a battery replacement, but; ya, my current phone can barely load PNGs in chat due to only having like 2gigs memory (with 1 and a half of that being for the OS or whatever)

My current phone is a Pixel 3 I bought for like $200USD last year right before they became hard to get after Slack stopped supporting their app on Android 6.
Your best option is probably a Pixel 4 but if you want to go $50USD cheaper you can probably still find a Pixel 3.

I have a pixel 3a, I smashed it before but it still works. idk how much longer it will be supported, new Pixels are too expensive so may get a Motorola next.
