Now instead of failing to get PS5s we can upgrade to failing to get PS5 Pros!

I will never understand console people and their base systems and pro versions and all that. Yeah a PC is more upfront but if you get decent parts it will literally play everything decent enough for 10+ years before you start to see performance issues.

I mean you don't see performance issues from consoles too for a long time. It's just some folk want more out of a system. I never bothered with PS4 pro and my PS4 still plays games perfectly fine. I've no desire to buy a PS5 Pro too. The PS5 is fine. I really doubt we will see a PS5 pro for years yet though.

Yeah, the notion of generation splitting seems silly to me. You either end up with a large chunk of the system's install base being unable to play games that are exclusive to the "pro" version (or stuck playing versions that aren't worth playing), or you end up paying a large amount for a pretty minor upgrade in performance (if developers even decide it's worthwhile to bother adding improvements to their games, which they may not if the "pro" version doesn't take off quickly enough). In practice, enough people are happy paying for that minor upgrade that the practice continues, but it's not particularly beneficial for consumers.

I wouldn't hold your breath. That would be a very significant upgrade that would dramatically increase the cost of the system and probably force a full redesign that would kill the portability, while offering little to no benefits for existing games and creating too much of a gap for it to be worthwhile to develop new games with it in mind (especially given the huge install base of the base Switch). I expect OLED to be the last Switch revision we see. Any other console release Nintendo announces is probably going to be a new generation.

I'm expecting BotW2 news at E3, either with a holiday 2022 release or announcing that they'll pull a TP/BotW and release it for both Switch and a successor system that they announce at the same time (possibly coming next year, given Nintendo's recent track record of announcing stuff relatively close to its release). Given what a high-profile title it is, I doubt they would make it require a half-generation upgrade. MK9 probably won't happen until said successor system, given that they just started rolling out a buttload of DLC tracks for 8.

What idiocy

People already paying scalpers for a PS5 with no games worth playing you can't get on PS4 or PC and now they'll all fall in line just 2 years later to buy a "Pro" version, too

The "Pro" shit largely didn't exist until last gen w/ the PS4 and Xbone doing it (unless you count the "New" 3DS, but that failed miserably like all these cash grabs should).
There would be slim versions, same power but a smaller box, but that was it.
And I agree. Yet another reason console gaming has gone down the damn drain, and I say that as someone who playing like 95% on consoles. But gradually shifting to PC now.

I actually doubt we'll hear anything about a Switch successor. The install base continues to grow, there's a global chip shortage with no end in sight, advances in technology since the Switch released has plateaued, etc.

Nintendo should (and likely will) ride the Switch until at least 2024 or 2025.

I dunno.. the huge delay in MP4, not seeing any thing new with BotW2 and with how old MK8 is.. I'm kinda leaning towards a new Switch sooner rather than later

Chip shortage probably isnt as big as deal as everyone's making it out to be, there are plenty of new OLED models in store and yeah, Sony are churning out another console

I'm hoping for BotW2 for the holidays, but it wouldnt surprise me if its held off until next year.. Nintendo will think we're set in 2022 with Kirby, Splatoon 3, the MK8 revival and the new Pokemon

I can understand not wanting to buy a console and then buy another one of the same consoles down the line... but what about those of us who waited to get a Pro and actually enjoyed getting a better framerate for some games?

I thought PS4 Pro was mostly for 4K graphics, not higher frame rates?

In any case, if it's like PS4 Pro, it's a minimal upgrade. They clearly stagger the releases to try and bait people into buying the same console twice, and making games for both versions means either it runs like crap on the vanilla console or the Pro version isn't actually changing much.

Many games had an option to favor resolution or performance

that's just it, consoles were something you buy cheaper than a pc to be at ease for the next ~8 years, no need to think about anything until next gen, that was the pro console line, but these X.5 versions (pro, new 3ds, switch also got a new version) bust that notion

the main factor was always exclusives though
