Not sure how I feel with Luffy no longer being the rubber man, but I like that his fruit is pretty much a different version of Sengoku's which is badass.

The dumbest thing about this last minute development is that there is no way to explain why he's been allowed to just exist all this time. Even if Garp had been obscuring details on Luffy so they had no idea of his fruit, he displayed it openly during Ace's execution. After that, there should have been a Buster Call made on every island on which he set foot until they captured him.

Yeah I am curious about this as well, hopefully we get an explanation. Maybe they thought Luffy had a different fruit which gave him stretch powers? Or maybe a lot of people in the past have eaten the fruit and just never awakened it over the last 800 years, so they weren't worried about it?

I am guessing Luffy is the pirate that Shanks went and talked to the Gorosei about too, maybe he told them "Hey there is a good chance Luffy awakens this devil fruit" which is why now is when they finally dispatched CP0 to take him out?

Shanks definitely talked to them about Luffy, but he's not a rat because it would literally make 0 sense for Shanks to have been on Rogers crew, close with Rayleigh and everyone, and protect Luffy from dying several times if he wanted him killed. He probably did a "I firmly believe Luffy will become the pirate king" speech and said that he ate the gomu gomu no mi. It makes sense because being stretchy isn't really a particularly impressive power so it wouldn't be reported on, and i'm sure the WG didn't put out hits on anyone with the fruit given that they hid its name for many years. It also explains why they put out a hit on Who's Who for losing the fruit when they finally got it lol

If people actively knew it was the Nika Nika fruit there would probably be a LOT of subjugated or opressed people within the world that would rise up and flock to Luffy since it seems Joy Boy had the Nika Nika fruit, and per Zunesha Luffy's awakening sounds like "the drums of liberation".

It's perfectly within the World Government, or perhaps more specifically the Gorosei's, modus operandi to not even inform their admirals of the Nika Nika fruit. Word would eventually slip to every ear that a daring and heroic pirate captain was the return of Joy Boy as foretold in apparently a LOT of folk tales.

Orochi being burned alive is good enough chapter, but luffy awakening is cherry on top.

What i get is nika fruit is basically the same as gomu, it's just WG hid the name so luffy isnt known to be the inheritor of joy boy's df.

Gear 5th awakening makes him even harder and stronger, and have more free control over his body, not having different laws of physics like cartoon

It sounds like the Nika fruit gives him complete control over his shape and body as opposed to his current Gears which are various ways of maintaining certain forms through constant resistance--Manually pumping his blood faster, holding his breath to inflate his bones, or using his haki to put his inflated muscles under tremendous compression like a spring. Like other Awakened fruit he seems to be able to change his environment with ease as well but... From what we saw, perhaps in an even more exaggerated way.

The writing was right there on the wall the whole damn time. For ages I've been thinking this was weird. Figured whatever, devil fruits don't need perfect logic to be fun, and Gear 3rd was definitely fun. But it always stuck out to me how he blew up his arm like Popeye and just...somehow got stronger from that. It didn't make sense but I guess it didn't need to.

Only recently when Who's Who brought the subject up again did me and my friends start entertaining the possibility that it was a Mythical Zoan. It was the only thing that made sense in context; after all Luffy's Gears are just like Chopper's Points when you get right down to it. We even worked out that it was probably the Hito Hito no Mi; though we couldn't agree on what mythical human he could be based on. Some of my friends were deadset that he was a wukong reference (one pointed to a reddit thread of some deity I don't quite remember), but I thought he was some kind of "Smile Man", and that his rubber body was supposed to make people laugh.

Hell, to take it a step further. Kaidou wants to be joyboy. That's why he's making SMILEs. Luffy is laughing uncontrollably? Just like the failed SMILE fruits. Kaidou was trying to recreate the gomu gomu no mi this whole time and didn't even know it. And now we see that Luffy has gone full toon-force. It's absolutely perfect. GODA wins again. This whole damn time his body was a reference to rubber-hose animation.

One piece has continuity. Detective Conan is long-running but its episodes are mostly self-contained stories. Sometimes they do arcs, but in general the show is content to never go anywhere or do anything. Think of it like the Simpsons, or Spongebob. One Piece on the other hand has been one continuous narrative for its entire run. Each island tells its own story, but sometimes you get chains of islands telling a bigger narrative. Some of the more famous ones being Water 7 > Enies Lobby, or Saboady Archipelago > Amazon Lily > Impel Down > Marineford.

Because each island is somewhat self-contained you can jump in pretty easily at the start of each new arc. But to get the most out of it you'll need to go back and read from the start. Even chapter 1 has clues that are only just now paying off. Like luffy mentioning that ever since he got a devil fruit he's been happy. Probably a side-effect of a Zoan affecting his disposition, something we've known about since someone mentioned Carnivorous DFs making people more ferocious.

This is what I'm thinking, that no one awakens that fruit, but it does seem a little loose so there is probably more to it. If it's really such a problem, then even if they think it's highly unlikely that he would awaken it, wouldn't it make sense to just snuff out the threat early?

Maybe that's share they were trying to do all along? Like maybe they gave the warlords special privileges because they had to use them as bait to lure out and eliminate the one who had the gum gum fruit, and they just assumed that each one would have a chance at accomplishing the goal? There seems to be a common theme of enslavement with most of the leaders Luffy fought.

I'm pretty sure they are implying that the gomu gomu no mi just doesn't awaken easily and that it's obviously been eaten by people since its in the devil fruit book and the WG says it seems to escape from them all the time.

With Luffys combination of traits though the WG things he has a serious chance of awakening it. I mean this guy is
the son of Dragon and Garp
a D, known as their natural enemy
gathering allies extremely quickly
directly defies the WG's authority and declared war on them, and instigated the only mass prison breakout in Impel Downs history
has taken down many warlords and is directly fighting the Yonko in an all out war
and the general shifting of the world from balance, many big time players are finally starting to make a move on the One Piece

also Luffys tendency to do the impossible from people countlessly underestimating him

Not every detail gets passed around to the top, and as I recall the Navy has a slightly adversarial relationship with the gorosei as well. All they really know is that Who's Who lost it. In fact if you want to pinpoint the moment where the gorosei probably learned of the gomu gomu no mi's presence, it was probably Enies Lobby. Up until that point the navy was likely keeping all the bounty information in-house, and it wasn't until CP9 and luffy's declaration of war that heads started turning.

And immediately after that, what happens? Kuma shows up to hunt Luffy. Then Saboady Archipelago happens and they lose sight of him. And then he makes that splash in Marineford. Pretty much from the moment of Enies Lobby onward they've been sending government agents after him and failing at every turn. (mostly just Kuma interfering, but still) It's probably a delicate balancing act, maintaining the composure to appear like they're just stamping out an annoying weed, while also trying to snuff out a seed of rebellion in the making.

I don't think the Buster Call would have been on their table either. Especially after the fuck up at Enies Lobby, but more than that you're destroying entire civilizations while chasing one pirate around. It's a quick way to end Luffy sure, but it would be even more ammo for the Revolutionary army. (which also probably requires a constant commitment of government resources. Maintaining a world-spanning empire isn't easy)
