A South Carolina sheriff is defending the fatal shooting of a Black man who advanced on officers with a wooden stake, saying deputies can't be expected to sacrifice their lives in dangerous situations.

Critics say Moorer Charley was having a mental health crisis and that deputies were wrong to shoot him. But Lott told reporters Sunday that when Deputy John Anderson arrived at the family home, multiple people said Moorer Charley had injured them and said Moorer-Charley was inside with a knife.

Lott played a clip of body camera video where Anderson repeatedly yells at Moorer Charley to Drop the weapon! as Moorer Charley walks toward the deputy, who is slowly backpedaling.

Lott said that a second deputy, Zachary Hentz, later arrived, and that deputies unsuccessfully tried to use an electrical stun gun to subdue Moorer Charley.

They did try to use the Taser," Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said. "It did not not stick in the skin. And so it did not stop him as you would expect.

Lott said that immediately after that, Moorer Charley charged Hentz, who shot Moorer Charley four times.

Cops clearly arent sufficiently trained to deal with people that have mental illnesses.

Cops need better training. The whole system needs a reboot. Killing people shouldnt be the go-to solution to everything.

Don't see what race had to do with this. The guy charged him with a weapon so he fired. Case closed.

Cops constantly kill mentally ill people. They only know how to use violence.

It makes me mad they whine about risking their life, when citizens who have cop encounters are risking THEIR lives

It makes me mad when the ACAB crowd immediately point fingers at officers, even if the officers actions are justified.
Its like officers are damned if they do, damned if they dont.

Yes. You could have made this topic without race-baiting.

There are several cases of police murdering unarmed Black people. That's a fact. But you deliberately chose an example of a man attacking a police officer with a weapon and deliberately neglected to mention that detail in your clickbait title.

Sounds fair given the circumstances. Maybe there are better tools or protocols that could have helped, but a charging assailant with a weapon is completely justifiable to shoot. First responders' lives are more important than the assailant at that point, even if it's a tragic case caused by poor mental health. I can't really think of much else that can stop an assailant with absolute certainty, though. Tasers, those long restraining poles you see used in Asia, beanbag guns, etc are all a lot more fallible than a gun.

You don't get to violently assault and potentially murder people just because you're having a "mental health crisis." Too bad. You still know what you're doing is wrong and you know what the consequences of trying to murder someone are.

Somehow deadly force isn't needed in almost all of Europe yet stupid fucking Americans think this shooting is normal and justified.

A better way would be more than one officer having a stun gun.

Or if there are two officers there, using the two together to take the man down.

Its time we stopped proclaiming cops guilty until proven innocent. This is the US, we dont lynch people before trying them in a court of law.

Sadly, this was more effort than the usual response to a black person being considered a threat.

There was probably a better way, but this particular shooting seems more reasonable than the typical encounter.

But it has nothing to do with Americans being less compliant. It's a consequence of the gun culture ingrained in the country. The chances of guns being used are more likely from both the police and the public.

If it went down the way they say it did, then that's fair, but why not release the body cam footage?

And that pesky 2A is why cops carry guns. To protect themselves from citizens having them. No other country that I know of has such a right for citizens in their laws.
