The Cannibal Holocaust director Ruggero Deodato was put on trial for having his actors killed while recording the movie.
The movie was seen as evidence and the actors had disappeared.
It turned out that according to the contracts, the actors would stay away from the public eye for a while.

A mermaid "documentary" once fooled so many people that the U.S. government had to issue a statement:

In 2013, Animal Planet aired Mermaids: The New Evidence, a documentaryor rather, a mockumentarythat "proved" the half-human-half-fish beings exist. And while the program was fake, plenty of the 3.6 million viewers that watched believed that the fictional claims were real. In fact, so many people were fooled that the U.S. government's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released a statement on its website addressing the confusion, saying: "Mermaids: The New Evidence is just entertainment. No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found."

I was shortly trucked into believing one done on dragons. They showed it to us in school iirc

I saw this story about Bobbi Gibb and thought it was nice :3

When she applied to run in the Boston Marathon in 1966 they rejected her saying: Women are not physiologically able to run a marathon, and we cant take the liability.

Then exactly 50 years ago today, on the day of the marathon, Bobbi Gibb hid in the bushes and waited for the race to begin. When about half of the runners had gone past she jumped in.

She wore her brothers Bermuda shorts, a pair of boys sneakers, a bathing suit, and a sweatshirt. As she took off into the swarm of runners, Gibb started to feel overheated, but she didnt remove her hoodie. I knew if they saw me, they were going to try to stop me, she said. I even thought I might be arrested.

It didnt take long for male runners in Gibbs vicinity to realize that she was not another man. Gibb expected them to shoulder her off the road, or call out to the police. Instead, the other runners told her that if anyone tried to interfere with her race, they would put a stop to it. Finally feeling secure and assured, Gibb took off her sweatshirt.

As soon as it became clear that there was a woman running in the marathon, the crowd eruptednot with anger or righteousness, but with pure joy, she recalled. Men cheered. Women cried.

By the time she reached Wellesley College, the news of her run had spread, and the female students were waiting for her, jumping and screaming. The governor of Massachusetts met her at the finish line and shook her hand. The first woman to ever run the marathon had finished in the top third.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iditarod_Trail_Sled_Dog_Race

"The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, more commonly known as The Iditarod, is an annual long-distance sled dog race run in early March. It travels from Anchorage to Nome, entirely within the US state of Alaska. Mushers and a team of between 12 and 14 dogs, of which at least 5 must be on the towline at the finish line, cover the distance in 815 days or more. The Iditarod began in 1973 as an event to test the best sled dog mushers and teams but evolved into today's highly competitive race."
The trail is a 983 mile trip in the most grueling conditions.

Take what I'm going to say with a grain of salt since it's based on vague memories of seeing dog sleds years ago as transportation instead of racing, but you only have a portion of your dogs pulling at a time. The rest run along on leads as pulling the sled is more exhausting than just running. For a race I'd assume it starts out that way, but by the end most of the dogs will probably have been retired from the race at the camps due to exhaustion and injuries. Looking it up in recent years 1 or no dogs die during the race. For example in 2018:

"Iditarod 20181 Dog Died
1,059 dogs started the 2018 Iditarod.
533 dogs dropped out of the race.
1 dog died during the race.
Only 525 dogs were able to finish.
RIP Blondie
  • Blonde, a five-year-old male from the race team of Katherine Keith (bib #51), died at the Koyuk checkpoint. Blonde had been dropped there earlier in the day and was being treated by veterinarians for signs of pneumonia."
It appears you're disqualified if one of your dog dies with some exceptions for things out of your control like drunk snowmobilers, or moose attacks. It's still a horrible race in my opinion with a huge health impact to the dogs. Take 2016 for example:

"Iditarod 20161 Dog Died
1,346 dogs started the 2016 Iditarod.
611 dogs dropped out of the race.
1 dog died during the race.
Only 734 dogs were able to finish.
RIP Nash
595 dogs finished with signs of lung damage.
488 dogs finished with ulcers or ulcerations.
  • A snowmachiner says he was driving drunk when he hit two dog teams racing in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Saturday, killing one dog and injuring several others. The snowmachine hit Kings team, according to a press release from the Iditarod Trail Committee, resulting in the death of 3-year-old Nash and non-life-threatening injuries to two others: 2-year-old Banjo and 3-year-old Crosby. A dog in Zirkles team also received a non-life-threatening injury."

There's a textbook written entirely by an AI author:

No, that's not a cheeky pseudonym; it's the name of a machine-learning algorithm designed by researchers from Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. The book is called Lithium-Ion Batteries: A Machine-Generated Summary of Current Research. Guinea pigs were once sacrificed wearing earrings and necklaces and wrapped like sushi:

Lidio Valdez, an archaeologist from the Institute of Andean Studies, made a surprising discovery in Peru when he came across 100 dead guinea pigs that had been sacrificed by the Incan people during the 16th century. The rodents, which had clearly been a part of some sort of ritual, were adorned with earrings and necklaces made from colorful string. "Some were even wrapped in cotton rugs like a sushi roll," wrote Gizmodo of the findings, which were published in the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology in 2019.

The word "tennis" comes from the French word "to take". When French people played the game way back in the day, anytime a player would hit the ball they would say "tennez" (z is not pronounced, it would sound like "tenny"), like saying "take it" (the ball). The game has been called that ever since.

So I was playing BBTAG and noticed that Hazama says "I'm taking off the kiddie gloves" during one of his supers, which got me wondering where that kiddie gloves saying came from. So I went and looked that up and it was pretty neat.

Apparently the kid part doesn't refer to children at all. Well, not human children. The gloves were literally made out of the skin of kids, as in young goats. And that leather was soft and smooth, so it wouldn't smudge delicate things like silverware or museum artifacts. Which is why kiddie gloves are used to handle someone/something delicate :3

Some Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory facts:

- The scene where Wonka makes his first appearance outside the factory was the first time any of the other actors had met Gene Wilder. Their reactions to his cane and surprise tumble were genuine.

- The child actors' reactions to the Chocolate Room were also genuine, because that was the first time any of them had seen it... except for Veruca. She had been given a sneak peak earlier that day.

- As far as any of the actors (who were not named Gene Wilder) knew beforehand, there wasn't anything particularly notable about the now-infamous boat ride scene... but then the creepy shit started. More genuine reactions.

- That "chocolate river" that took down Augustus was, as you'd expect, not chocolate. It was just cold, dirty water that had been loaded with food coloring and given a salt treatment.

- A full third of the props in the Chocolate Room set were actually edible.

- Veruca's "I Want it Now" song scene required 36 takes, and just so happened to be filmed on her actress' birthday.

- The Wonka Bars in the mass-unwrapping scene were all just wood, because trying to film a scene with multiple takes in a hot factory floor using thousands of actual chocolate bars would've been a nightmare.

- During the rehearsal for the scene with Wonka in his office telling Charlie and Grandpa Joe that they violated the contract they signed and had lost, Gene Wilder remained calm. It wasn't until the actual filming of the scene that he exploded at them in "anger", so the reactions are at least partly genuine here, too.

- This was the only film Peter Ostrum (Charlie Bucket) ever appeared in. He still gets royalties, but only about $11 every three months.

- Every single day of filming, director Bob Fosse would come in to complain about filming taking too long and running over time for him to work on Cabaret, which use some of the same set locations.
