Obviously games that have had like 9+ installments have some shit ones.

But I mean "Following the success of 1, here's 2!" games with the biggest drop.

A lot of people jump to Dragon Age but Dragon Age 2 isn't "bad" it's just that Origins was so good so 2 being console focused was disappointing. I think Zelda 2 is in the same bucket.

Outlast 2 springs to mind for me. "Let's take the good parts about Outlast, not improve or change them in anyway and then make everything else much worse and less interesting."

Probably not the best example, but Final Fight 2 comes to mind. It adds almost nothing in terms of mechanics, features extremely forgettable new playable characters and enemies, and lacks any of the charm the first game had.

Sonic riders 1 to zero gravity. Gutted the gameplay and mechanics completely to appeas the bad who never beat jet or learned the game proper.

Honorable mention to Dark Souls 2.

Classic example of rushing a sequel, with none of the magic. Whenever someone complains that Souls games are just "designed to be difficult, and nothing else," DS2 is what happens when that's actually true

Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. Couldn't believe how much weaker the second game was (although it was still very good). Quesionnable level design; slightly broken up framerate; too many RPG elements; tried too hard to be "clever"; boss encounter and transformation in every level; some of the novelty sections weren't very well executed.

Not only that, ME1 had a lot if varied environments and the reused areas were largely filler and side content

DA2 reused the same 10 maps throughout the entire game

Probably has to do with first in series vs. not first in series. This was something rectified by ME2 but went backwards on with DA2.

The combat was dull and the map resuage was inexcusable

But the game was still really good

The Qunari are what Ceasers Legion in New Vegas should have been

DMC2 is the easy answer. They competely changed the tone, the story was nonexistent, the gameplay was boring (how can a DMC game be boring!?), and the visuals aren't even good to make up for it.

Honorable mention for Prototype 2, whose gameplay was still fun, but whose story was one of the worst decisions ever made for a sequel to a successful first game.

"Oh, you liked the first game and its complex narrative? Here's something competely fucking different, and the guy you were playing as before, who you liked? He is now a generic evil villain who wants to dominate the world. No, it's not a misunderstanding. No, you don't team up with him later. He just fucking dies like a scrub."

The main problem is ME1 had a great narrative and interesting mechanics (save the mako, which gets rightfully roasted) to compensate for its same-y level design, environment structure, and reused areas. It also helps that the re-used areas are most prominent in completely-optional, skippable, side areas.

DA2 has none of those advantages.

Came into post this. I also don't like how the first game felt like it had a proper narrative and the second game just fell back on the incredible lazy "spend 80% of the game gathering your party to do one or two missions at the very end" trope.

I was going to say devil may cry 2 easily (I can still remember my brother's disappointment to this day since he pre-ordered that shit, lol), but those that brought up alundra 2 and yoshi's story reminded me of how crap those games were compared to their predecessors.

To be fair when it comes to alundra, alundra 2 was meant to be some other shitty game but had the name alundra slapped onto it in an attempt to boost sales probably. It backfired badly.

Had the actual final fantasy 2 been localized back in the day I probably would have said that also. I tried to play actual FF2 and just could not get into it.

kotor 2 was pretty bad compared to the impact kotor 1 had. it was a broken, unfinished game. it also had nowhere near the story, characters, plot, or influence as the first. that's a pretty massive drop in quality.

ffta sucks though so i wanna give it to that.
