Strong disagree. I played Yoshis Island for the first time recently and was scratching my head why its so well-regarded. Yoshis Story took a lot from its predecessor in terms of tone/quirkiness/sound design, but IMO its an improvement over Island in those aspects. Gameplay-wise, Island is mind-numbingly easy, despite Yoshis awkward physics. Story is easy too, of course, but some of the stages at higher heart levels provide real challenge. And controlling Yoshi feels much better in Story. And Story has a more interesting variety in level design.

Deadly Premonition 2

for the last one, I know that the original isn't this polished game, but it's one of my favorite. the sequel, however, has this super unlikeable York, dumb, grimdark story about some deranged family, and the performance is also a lot worse than the original's.

kotor 2 was pretty bad compared to the impact kotor 1 had. it was a broken, unfinished game. it also had nowhere near the story, characters, plot, or influence as the first. that's a pretty massive drop in quality.
Huge disagree. KotOR 2's biggest strength is in its character and story that are leagues beyond 1.

With the restoration mod KotOR2 is so much better than 1 its insane (and yes, I know it is "modded" but its simply restoring planned, cut content due to the game being rushed out the door)

Bioshock 2 was a step down story wise and didn't have the same mystique and aura that the first one had but the gameplay was a lot better. There was a lot more creativity with the combat that really expanded on what was available in one (which made it more disappointing when Infinite scaled back the weapons and plasmids and turned combat into another corridor shooter.

Ive got to disagree on SMB, and Zelda 2. Were they different than the first game, and subsequent sequels? Sure. But, they were good games nevertheless. I played the hell out of both of them back in the day.
