Saw "Shane" last night on some HD channel and it just wasn't the same.

Looks like the shit they use to make soap operas or some shit.

I saw it on Blu-ray a few years back and I thought it looked pretty great. Probably a different transfer?

The only people who care about framerate are gamers.
TV has been 30 since forever
Film has been 24 since forever
Animation has been 12 since forever.

60 FPS is for soap operas.

Modern TVs have a "cinema or game mode" to preserve native speed and resolution off whatever media you view it on.

Maybe TC didn't adjust the settings or something because the artificial motion blur and frame-skipping is the default for tvs with 120hz rate.

I mean it wasn't ugly.

Just looked like the actors were filmed on a green stage or whatever the hell it's called.

TV is actually either 24fps or 25fps, depending on territory. In fact, if you buy a region free Blu-ray player, you still have to make sure it can portray things in 25fps because a lot of British television shows or television film Blu-rays that you import will be in 25fps. If it's not properly modified, it's gonna get weird.

Disagree. Ever see Dick Tracy or Escape from New York in 4K? The matte paintings in those movies are absolutely phenomenal.

The Star Wars prequels or most 2000s movies filmed with lots of CGI though...those are only made worse in high resolution which make the green screen shots pop out more jarringly.

Not my TV.

House and cat sitting for a friend over the weekend who is in Florida.

Some trippy stuff comes on and shows Pluto TV between movies.

This scene looks as if I was looking at it staring out of a literal window.

If it looks like a soap opera it's a framerate issue, not a resolution issue. Agreed you probably have motion smoothing on. Film is an analog format, meaning its apparent quality is higher than HD.

Shit, even modern movies look awful when they get upscaled to 60FPS. I think there's something in our brains that makes us want movies to be 24 FPS, because anything higher feels weird.

Soap operas look the way they do because they're shot on videotape. Most high quality television shows, since the 1950s, are ultimately done on 35mm film (non-English TV shows tend to be either tape or 16mm, though, until the digital revolution). In fact it was I Love Lucy that first adapted this format of combining filmmaking elements and television, and the resulting high quality of the material changed the way TV was made due to, well, the show breaking like every record. But videotape is cheap, and if people keep tuning in for cheapjack video shit, why change? Hence, soap operas.

This is also why some of the worst Twilight Zone episodes have that soap opera effect - they were done on video, not film, much to the consternation of Rod Serling, so they look like shit, whereas the good episodes could be projected on a big screen like a movie and look excellent. Needless to say, those filmed episodes of Twilight Zone, and other great black and white shows, look so good on Blu-ray, and obviously early color shows look visually excellent even if the low budgets are more noticeable.
