I'm sure there'll be detractors in here but I think it balances atmospheric storytelling and actual cutscenes well. It's a simple story but the champions and other side characters are great.

Anyway, it's either this or LA as far as best Zelda story, imo.

What story? There really isn't a forward-moving plot so much as there are scenes of the past functioning to do the barest minimum character building for characters that...make zero decisions of any consequences (in the past or in the present). Does the game even have one identifiable plot moment besides the one you get from leaving the plateau, let alone a memorable one? Zelda awakening her powers is all I can think of and it's not exactly anything compelling.

Definitely a disappointment for me in this department initially, especially after Skyward Sword knocked it out of the park, story-wise. Yet Breath of the Wild is still the best open world game ever made (haven't played Elden Ring yet) so ultimately the lack of a story didn't bug me much at all by the end.

The world-building is great. The flashbacks are fantastic and there are some memorable characters, like Urbosa and Sidon. However, all of this is under-utilized, shelved in favor of exploration. The story is a whole lot of nothing even if the parts that comprise it are solid. I'm also unable to recall a memorable moment that wasn't getting off the plateau.

So while Breath of the Wild does some things well, the story is lackluster. But at least it's better than the messy disaster that was Skyward Snore, which I think I've ranted about enough.

I really like the minimalistic approach to story telling here. It works well for the kind of game it is. The flashbacks are done really well and they absolutely nailed it with Zelda's VA.

... 5 actually. Was gonna go lower but when I think about it I do like what's there................. it's just that there's not much of it. Definitely not what you play the game for, although I'm interested in where BotW2 goes.

2 - Story is incredibly weak imo. Link awakens to a world he no longer really has any connection to and you have to find his memories for him to even have any reason to care at all, but those are so minimal they cant really develop most of the characters beyond stereotypes and theres almost nothing left of the world to save at this point either.

I think the biggest issue is theres no reason to care because basically all of the story happened in the past and you experience none of it yourself so it doesnt give you any kind of drive or emotional connection to anything.

I like the approach. There's character development in the past memories for Zelda and even Link that most games in the franchise don't attempt. Doesn't get in the way of the game too.

Not terrible, but not enough story for my liking.

7.5/10. Really good storytelling, uses the open world format excellently, and sets the standard for how open world stories should be told. The actual plot itself though is just fine, although it does have a great version of Zelda and good characters all around. I also like that it was basically about drone warfare, that was more ambitious thematically than I expected.
