We're talking about a game that had to borrow assets from FFXIV wholesale because they didn't have the manpower to create their own.

This game has looked like garbage from the minute they actually showed what it is and I'm not sure what they were thinking.

The demo didn't change any of that.

Oh man, excited. One of my favorite things is to go search out people doing mental gymnastics to defend something bad they were hyped for. This looks like a good one

Kind of seems like some people were hyped for a little while after the original teaser and then they released some basic details and those same people went "Oh. Never mind then."

Yeah I really don't think anyone has this on the radar at any point other than the CG reveal trailer.

Platinum is not capable of making anything of value other than single player character action games other than Anarchy Reigns which was ahead of its time.

to be fair if people are taking this opportunity to bash a game for only having 650 peak players, it should come as no surprise that they didn't consider sol cresta at all

35 on Open, yikes. I don't think I've seen OC scores get that low before. This was doomed to fail once they revealed what kind of game it actually was, but still this is on another level.

Feels like Square Enix wanted this to be a GaaS tentpole alongside Avengers, and after that crashed and burned they got cold feet and are shoving this out the door quietly to get cannibalized by Stranger of Paradise and die.

Definitely not the type of game Platinum is used to making, either, so that doesn't help.

Most shmup fans are playing on consoles though arent they? Like they were conditioned by all those 360-only releases to just keep buying stuff on consoles I think

I'm kind of intrigued by just how few people play it.

Oh good, it wasn't just me. My first thought upon reading the title was "Didn't that come out a couple of months ago?" The last book being called Leviathan Falls doesn't help things either.

Plus there's another book called Babylon's Ashes, so it's doubly confusing!

Anyway, Square Enix has been an absolutely baffling company for some time now, largely held afloat by FFXIV and having some very talented studios (eg Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, Team Asano) they do their best to get in the way of. It is very clear that they have no vision for what kinds of games they want to make or how to make them.

I mean in the last four years they have released The Quiet Man, Left Alive, Balan Wonderworld, and now Babylons Fall. Somehow each year Square-Enix is managing to release one of the worst major publisher games ever made. What is going on over there? Not even getting into how they stapled GaaS onto Avengers effectively ruining a game that should have been a slam dunk, which they have done again here but with a much worse game.

after the pool of major console shmups dried up post-360, pc kind of became the default at least in terms of releases (it got the most ports of said 360 stuff at least)... i never really considered if it actually had the largest playerbase though. with the doujin shmup scene also having largely disappeared in recent times it could well be that the bulk of the community well and truly is with switch and (to a lesser extent) ps4 now. idk, i personally default to steam (or more so drm free/physical pc) releases over switch where applicable but don't expect that to apply to everyone, i just got influenced by the pc doujin side so shrug

in any case though i doubt even in the most ideal scenario that it competes with babylon's fall which has been slowly increasing in player counts somehow
