There really is a difference, the netflix seinfeld is... shorter. Its noticeable here and there, but its most egregious in the pothole episode

https://images.perthnow.com.au/publication/B882028925Z/1633425261552_GQV3GF4IN.1-2.jpg

On the other hand, the 16:9 version, being wider, actually contains more of the scene than the original 4:3, for example if they have a car parked to the right in the background you actually see the whole car in 16:9 while only half of it in the 4:3 DVD version.

Isn't there a perfect world where the 16:9 wide version is just as tall as the 4:3 version? Why would it even be shorter?

lmfao how does that scene even make any sense if the viewer can't see the covered up pothole?

I know Buffy was filmed in 16:9 but was intended to be cropped to 4:3 so in the 16:9 versions you can see boom mikes and crew and the edges of background.

Reminds me of when they forced a widescreen format on older Simpsons episodes, causing a lot of the scene to outright be cut out.

The streaming versions of Buffy are all screwed up. The color tint in scenes are changed around, cropping issues chopping off the top and bottom, and the stuff you mentioned.

Malcolm in the Middle had the same issues as well, and sometimes you could even see actors off screen not doing anything until it was their time in the scene.

One instance even had a double for Dewey who on 4:3 was cut off but in 16:9 was fully visible. The domino scene also showed a finger pushing a portion of the dominos at one point.

Same with friends on Netflix, which is why I like that version because you can literally see how fake the apartment is when the 16:9 shows they're just on a sound stage basically

Where are you watching that version of buffy?

I heard the color grading is sort of off too. Is that true? One thing I'm glad I'm old fashioned about is getting DVDs.

I think I remember seeing the episode where Homer tours the Duff brewery and the part where they show the different varieties of beer, the picture cut out the one pipe feeding each different vat which basically cut out the joke.

I just saw the episode and you're right, that sucks. Why do they so this though? Is it cheaper or something?

These things are always a mess, whether it's format issues or outright different versions. Wish it was consistent.

Like there's 3 different versions of The Office with different scenes and jokes.

The Friends DVD version has tons of deleted scenes incorporated into the episodes, so it's basically an extended cut of the entire series. This version can not be found anywhere else.

And then on top of that, if you ever catch these things on broadcast, they're further chopped up and swapped around. Like TNG on BBC is missing entire fucking scenes that make no sense. Like the Sarek episode just abruptly ends with no resolution lol.

I still think its funny that this became a big controversy when the show went to Netflix but it was like this on Hulu as well.

That doesnt really have anything to do with what I said.

And you can get ad-free Hulu.

No respectable release of video content should force an aspect ratio that cuts off part of the scene. Just give me the damn black bars I don't care, lol.

These companies never know what the fuck they're doing because they always assume "DURR DURR 16:9 make everything wider shot that's the ticket!" without ever doing research or hiring people to upscale video properly so there's not ever any missing shots.

It was the same bullshit before widescreen TVs were a thing with widescreen and full screen versions of DVDs.

And the worst part is trying to educate people on correct aspect ratios but most people just dont care.

TBS stretches reruns of Family Matters to 16:9 and it looks so wrong. Everyone appears to be much shorter.

Oh, thank god. I don't know who thought turning the old Simpsons episodes into 16:9 was anywhere close to a good idea.

Took it down because he got more accusations of abusing children. And as we all know, art by people who have even been accused of doing bad things should be destroyed.

And apparently they even removed it from newer DVD pressings of season 3. I'm glad I got it years ago before this bullshit happened.

This. The companies do this because people are idiots when it comes to this. I knew someone that would always play older 4:3 games stretched out to 16:9 because they didn't like the "black bars" on the sides.

Mass Effect 2 does exactly this.

The game is rendered in 4:3 no matter what you do. If you raise the resolution to a 16:9 format, they just take a small rectangle from the 4:3 and blow it up, but it's shorter and you miss out on a LOT of screen information.

Honestly ME1 didn't have this problem, and it was so frustrating that I never picked up ME2 after a few hours of fucking around with the settings as much as i could.

It's honestly a damn shame. I know most people might not care, but this is so bad I would never watch Seinfeld on netflix, and I probably wont play mass effect 2 or 3...ever.

edit: this also happens in every single SNES game that is on both SNES & Genesis. SNES has smaller resolution so the graphics are always cropped and stretched in comparison (Earthworm Jim, for example).

Were new pressings of the Simpsons DVDs ever even a thing at that point? Last I saw, theyre all out of print. Pretty sure Disney did the seasons 1-20 box set just to get rid of remaining stock
