He's right.

Oftentimes during contract negotiations the company gets what they want, the union heads and stewards get their pay bump, and everyone else is left worse than they were before.

all it would take to cripple amazon is a company wide strike for a few days. they would be begging for employees to come back and would be compensating them to an extent never seen before

its probably happened once or twice (dont care to look it up), and thats all it takes for boot lickers to say all unions are bad and that unions are a net negative

When describing the collective bargaining process, the union buster explains to workers that The negotiation phase of the process is called collective bargaining, and in the negotiation, there are no guarantees you can end up with better, the same, or worse than you already have.

An employee interrupts and asks, So wait, youre saying we could end up with worse. What does that mean?

There are no guarantees as to what would happen, right? We cant make any promises things will get better or stay the same. They could get worse. We cant promise whats going to happen. Amazon cant promise you that theyre going to walk into negotiations and that the negotiations will start from the same [pay and benefits workers have already], the union avoidance official says. They could start from minimum wage, for instance. I dont think that will happen, but its a possibility.

So youre saying that Amazons gonna say the worker responds.

I just said Im not saying that, the Amazon official said.

So why put that out there? the worker says.

Three takeaways you can reflect upon, she says, changing the subject.

Yeah, I worked in Labor Relations for years and sit in on the contract negotiations for my current company. The contract never gets better. All that happens is that union dues are slowly increased, and employee freedoms and protections are slowly taken away.

It's not illegal to just dock pay because profits are down a teeny bit and CEO can't buy his second luxury jet?

I'm in a union, Ive been on a few contract negotiation committees and yes while they (we) push to get the % higher into the welfare fund, the points also go into pension and annuity, the pay goes up, they ask we counter, we ask they counter, theres bargaining chips on both sides but you dont weaken or give back, thats not what a union is about

unions are a good thing

My union experience has mostly been positive. We make more money than the people at non union competitors and have better benefits.

The worse unions are the corrupt ones who side with the corporation for personal gain and due to a lot of restrictions and rules the people the union are suppose to work for can't get rid of the reprehensive and thus not only does the company keep doing what they're doing they can blame all the negativity on the union head or heads and people will buy it as all unions are bad.

Three examples are the teachers union, the police union for some places, especially Texas, the union for places like Walgreens, Walmart and other warehouse places. Such is a natural flow of workplace politics

while true, what happens is that most negotiations are give and take.

you wont go down in your hourly pay, but you may forgo a raise in order to not lose somewhere else. Or they may reallocate existing benefits to another benefit that doesnt appreciate till much later on in your career. Or they switch to a different insurance provider that has higher copays or premiums .

or you relinquish a perk in order to benefit somewhere else where many members may not agree.

or as others have mentioned - someone else gets a benefit like a shop steward or a union rep while the workers get nothing.

and getting nothing sucks because youre competing with cost of living and expenses as well. So staying stagnant is almost as bad as losing out.

but even then, unions are better more often than not. But if the people in charge are scum youll be paying the bill at some point.

im also in a union for full disclosure with friends on the contract/negotiating committee.

Companys can do whatever the fuck they want. They can do everything illegally, but it doesn't matter, the fine is less than their profits.
