In reality I've never been to a real symphony and it's all just orchestrated video game music

It's worth going to actual orchestra concerts, if you can swing it. The dynamic contrast in classical music really relies on having good acoustics to carry the lows; recordings rarely do them justice and often require active volume adjustments to catch the quieter parts without being deafened by the loud bits. That's generally going to be less true for video game music, since it's composed and performed with the express intent of being recorded, but live performances of the same music can still improve on the dynamic contrast for an even better experience.

Heck, I might even go so far as to say that I enjoyed playing Mahler's 3rd with a crappy community orchestra more than I enjoy listening to Abbado's performance of it with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra (arguably the definitive performance of the piece). My version was, to no surprise, not very well-performed and generally much more thinly scored than it needed to be (it calls for 8 horns. We had two and two saxophones), but the last movement is an impossibly gorgeous piece of music that relies heavily on some really quiet parts that are all but completely lost in the recording (being Mahler, there are also some very loud parts, so it's a challenge to keep on top of the volume). Being right in the middle of it, I got everything, and it was magnificent.

Yeah, even a high quality FLAC file is still no comparison to a live orchestra in a concert hall specially built for maximum dynamic range. I've been to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra a couple of times and the difference is palpable. There is a visceral sensation you can feel in every inch of your body that a recording can never really quite reproduce.

Of all the things lost to the pandemic, the Orchestra is probably the one thing I really want back for in person performances.

It's really unfortunate how many people cling to the attitude that all video game music is bad. It's really a very outdated one, based on a time when everything was chiptunes and categorically disliking all of it was pretty fair. These days, though, game music is basically the same as movie music, except with more loops.

Likewise, but there are enough similarities in timbre across pretty much all chiptunes that I can understand somebody disliking all of them because they dislike that fundamental beep boop sound. There was a time when "video game music" could be said to be a discrete genre because of that unifying characteristic, and disliking genres based on their unifying characteristics is fair.

Now, however, VG music is just regular music that sometimes loops. It's pretty indistinguishable from any other modern instrumental music (and sometimes vocal), so I'm very comfortable saying that anyone claiming to dislike all of it is just clinging to their historical genre preferences. It's really not its own genre anymore.

Historic preferencesor general opposition to the idea of video games (despite enjoying video games). Some people just read that they are bad and believe they are bad categorically. Its not really a logical thing, unfortunately. Shell tap her toe to VG music until she remembers what it is.

Weve come to peace with that by and large. Well, except as it involves the kids.

Yeah, it can be hard for people to get over the "I didn't like this before, so I shouldn't be enjoying it now" thing, especially when there was social pressure involved in disliking it in the first place.

You should try some of the classic stuff, then. I listened to both growing up. You could try out pieces by the Scarlattis, those are really nice.

Here, I'll link you to a couple of things I grew up with. Dunno what OSTs you like, but you might enjoy these:

That said, it has helped me find a song before when I just knew the tune. It was about how you wrote it. And that hopefully, others have also asked the question... Even then, it's still very rare...

Yeah, it really fucking sucks when you hear a nice classical piece and if you're lucky the radio is like "that was blippity bloop #53235667" and you're like... wait, what was that again? What the fuck was that name? Why the fuck would anyone call their song that?
