It's going pretty great so far. Can't stress enough how much I enjoy the company I'm working for and my coworkers.

Work 100% remote and I'm only working with internal users. Work has been steady but never really unmanageable so plenty of down time while still feeling like I'm keeping busy.

Officially my role is Service Desk Administrator so I'm mostly responsible for making sure tickets are getting distributed to the right people, but I'll also take on some of the simpler, easier-to-troubleshoot tickets for myself.

Wasn't really sure if I'd be right for this industry, but given that I'm liking my job and people seem to think I'm doing a good job, I think I'm finally in the right place.

Keep pushing, you got this! The big thing for me was flexing my A+ and emphasizing my customer service experience.

I keep hearing the hardest part of IT is getting that first gig

Yeah it's true. Trying to get your first job in IT is difficult due to most job requiring having experience. Let alone years of it.

It is. The IT field values experience and self learning. While degrees and certs won't hurt, experience will outweigh them.

Keep in mind, the field is extremely broad. There are a few areas I absolutely hate while others I really enjoy.

I'm trying to get into something exactly like this for my first step into the industry. Hopefully I'll get there. Congrats TC!

Thanks everybody! I just remember being miserable a few months ago. Not that my last job was the worst in the world, but it felt like a sinking ship and I felt like I wasn't getting any closer to my goals. Now I've been feeling a lot more relaxed and at ease, especially since I'm getting paid more than any other employer I've been with.

I'm still trying to figure out what I really gravitate towards, but I know it's still early for me. My company has been talking about migrating to Azure and fortunately, I've been studying to take the AZ-104 so cloud technology is definitely an area of interest for me. I'm also liking the cybersecurity aspect of IT as well.

I also get really giddy whenever I get the chance to do something in Active Directory for whatever reason.

Honestly you won't know what you'll want to specialize in until you've been in IT for years and had a chance to get your hands on things. Spend at least your first 5 years or so being a jack of all trades. Not only will you get the hands on experience but you'll have a better understanding of how different areas work together.

Cloud is a given these days but like on prem, there's a lot of different stuff in cloud. You could be the guy managing the networking and infrastructure or running automation scripts to redeploy apps/servers. Small company you'd be doing it all, larger companies you'd be silo'ed into a particular set of responsibilities.

Make sure you learn how hybrid infrastructure works and not all cloud. Most companies have finally realized it's not cost effective to run everything in the cloud so they're pulling back and running the appropriate workloads in the cloud and on prem.

Also yeah AD is fun cause it's powerful and easy to use.

Just an fyi, Security+ is essentially a combination of A+ and Networking+. Make sure you don't reup the A+ cert when it expires if that's something you plan to do.

Also regarding the job hunt. Make accounts on LinkedIn, Dice, and Indeed. They aren't just useful as job search engines. Recruiters search these sites to place people in jobs. I don't even have to search for jobs anymore as I have recruiters emailing me opportunities instead. Work smarter, not harder.

I'm hoping to transition to an IT job working with internal users soon. Working with customers as part of an ISP is a nightmare and doesn't offer a ton of room for growth.
