You shouldn't start with any Ys games because they all suck

Get out.

They have mostly been very mediocre games so I wouldn't know which one to recommend as an entry point. Memories of Celceta was alright but I wouldn't say it was great or anything.

Ys VIII is such an overrated game though. I had to force myself to finish the game. Tried the series again with Ys IX multiple times and most recently I tapped out around the 10th hour. The game was so similar in structure to Trails of Cold Steel but the dialogue had like no soul in it and it had all the monotonous aspects of Ys VIII like the mind numbingly boring raids/tower defense crap which repeats like crazy. The Monstrum powers were cool but the execution feels a little too janky for me to have fun traversing around. After a while I felt the same way I did about VIII and even more so I put the game to rest permanently.

I never even got to experience how bad MMX7 was because I couldn't stand MMX6.

Honestly the only Ys games I've played that I would explicitly not recommend as starting points are I (it's bad) and II (it's only a little better and is a direct sequel of I). Maybe not Seven either since it's easily the weakest of the party system games (pending a playthrough of IX).
