I don't fully understand myself. I'm guessing it's marked for issue to a particular guard unit, and there aren't many out there. Berlin wall perhaps? Still a ridiculous price for a mag.

Considering how it's built on an older gun, there's plenty of potential for an experimental test model, and something like that escaping has all kinds of historical value, assuming it has any validity.

I think anyone stoked on guns for anything besides hunting is touched.

I don't know much about it myself. I just came across it while browsing gunbroker. If it's the dates you're wondering about, I'm pretty sure it's an AKM mag (AK-47). I think the ak74 text is just to pull search results to it. You see that a lot on there. Here's the description from the auction. Maybe that will answer your questions. I do, but the money put into those can usually be justified by one of two things.
Quality, someone put a considerable amount of time into making it.
Materials, whatever it's made out of is expensive to process and machine.

I understand it's rare, but $6,000 for a piece of bakelite with no defining characteristic other than a stamp mark is just stupid.
