mother 3 has tons of text so I assume it's just some cost / benefit analysis thing. it's not something you can just TL in a snap like that

unless they buy the fanTL but I'm not sure of the logistics of that

I've no interest in Earthbound, but if those Famicom Detective Club games would go on sale, it would be an instant buy.

I think it didn't come over because of the queer characters.

Nintendo censored queer characters for America in the past, but I think their logic has probably shifted.

Now-a-days, I think it's more than their queer characters are likely to be seen as stereotypes and they know it'll make them look bad in America (Japan being more accepting of stereotypes).

I'm not saying that America would have a problem with the queer characters in Mother 3, just that I think Nintendo thinks that we would have a problem with it.

It's not bad at all imo. Obviously I don't know in comparison to Japanese tho. It's just still very enjoyable.

Yeah, I firmly believe that the Magypsies are 100% the reason why they won't localize it. Which is kind of shame because they're actually pretty good representation.

I know this won't ever pan out, but I Ike to believe this will lead into not only a Mother 3 localisation, but with the GBA virtual console launching with the official Mother 3 localisation.

Nintendo is big enough to take the heat tbh. The entire internet could bitch about the Magypsies from now till doomsday, and then they release Animal Crossing or Pokemon or Zelda and everyone shuts up long enough to break sales records.

It may also have more to do with the fact that it was a GBA game released in 2006, two years after the DS launched, and given the time it'd take to translate it, it may not have released until 2007. Given that the EarthBound series is VERY niche, they probably just didn't think it was worth it.

Music copyrights and the whole Tanetane Island thing may have also contributed.

Also, if Nintendo were to officially translate it, I'd be concerned on how they'd handle Yokuba's official name.

The fan translation goes with "Fassad" which is extremely clever and fitting on so many levels that anything else would be a disappointment.

The translation is official and has existed since since the 90s. They were planning on releasing it but the SNES was coming out and they shelved it after the loc was done.
