Nicholson is the best live action Joker imo.

"..This town needs an Enima.."

But ya, also the industry wasn't completely overrun by these types of movies.

Burton & co. took the theater to you, almost completely ignoring the source material in favor of "What if these people actually existed?". Two real honest to goodness butterballs were cast in the lead roles. Two faces the audience will be shocked not to recognize. Two leads we all thought we were familiar with. Clad in armor and a cult of gangsters respectively. Loaded with Shakespearean levels in memorable dialogue, and a color palette to last through the ages, Batman '89 comes across more as a stage play filmed from iconic angles with impossibly quick set changes than it does a superhero movie, per se. The gags. The props. The merch. The music. Its success lead directly to the direction of TAS which has undeniable strides in forwarding the franchise, paving the way for everything from The Dark Knight to Arkham City. Arguably only Frank Miller's rendition of the vigiliant vigilante stands so tall above the rest somewhere along these great giants. In fact, '89 was so good, Hollywood got away with almost a decade of cheesey sequels banking on the audience's need to see more of that world.

It's definitely campier than people give it credit for, and honestly isn't that less silly than the Schumacher films.

It was great for the time, and can be a fun rewatch, but I think its one of the lesser Batman movies to date.

Keaton plays the role well. Ive never been a big fan of Jacks Joker. It just comes across as him being Jack pretending to be Joker, rather than actually playing the role. Vicki Vale is just there. And I also never understood why Knox played a journalist from like the 30s or 40s, rather than the (at the time) present day.

It definitely has some great lines though, and iconic scenes. Love that Joker!

I think so too, the original is still the best just like TMNT and Robocop. Wife disagrees, she still prefers the Christian Bale Batmans..

I can see the case for it being on Forever's level. But BnR is Adam West levels of camp that the Burton films never got close to. >_>

Anyways, I love the whole vibe of 89, but its kinda hard for me to sit through the whole thing these days.

Love the movie, but it didnt age very well, Imho. What Ill always remember is the hype they managed to create. They had half the country wearing Batman t shirts more than a month before the movie premiered. One day in summer school, a stereotypical looking comic book nerd, clearly frustrated by all the normals appropriating his favorite character started quizzing me, and acting all superior when I couldnt answer his questions. One of the popular girls had my back, basically telling him to shut the fuck up.
