My hunch is that cost of interstellar travel is so prohibitively high that advanced intelligence at most branches out to only a small bubble of stars surrounding their home system. Once that's done, the species is basically safe from extinction and it's not like resources could reliably be sent back to enrich a central authority or alleviate any resource shortage (which is unlikely to be exhausted).

If that's the case aren't we kinda doing the equivalent of shining a flashlight everywhere
not really, radio waves are going to distort into white noise well before they go far enough to reach a potential neighbor. maybe one of them could of heard an early radio signal, we used to blast them everywhere, but we've gotten much more efficient over the last several decades.

If FTL travel doesn't exist, the only way for distant space travel would either be self-sufficient colony ships or extremely advanced cryostasis. If that's the case, they have bigger worries than spying on barely developed planets, not even counting the distance would make it impossible for them to find us.

If FTL travel does exist, they're likely just too far away even with that mobility. If the closest life is a billion lightyears away, then there'd be no way any trace of them would ever reach us.

An extraterrestrial or transdimensional creature would not be unlike literally any other person or animal or microbia or plant....

They would require a very specific set of circumstances to cross paths with you for the sake of communication (especially peaceful communication like an exchange of ideas). This is assuming the organism or entity in question even actually exists or is capable of communication in the way we do. They probably wouldn't even bother threatening you or yelling at you unless they felt their young were threatened, or they were trying to establish territory. Most creatures are perfectly content running away, spying on you from the shadows, and/or jumping out of nowhere to kill you & possibly also eat you. If they appear to mock you, it is likely only to establish themselves in the eyes of their own herd. If they had contacted us in the past, with the rise of indirect communication like the internet, maybe they prefer to influence things behind the scenes and get humans to try to contact them or do their dirty work like building crazy machines. The aliens may also be trying to weed out the possibility of other threats in the universe and galaxy and are hiding behind the loud, boisterous earthlings as a smokescreen. Who knows.

The reasons are as many as you can imagine and more.

fact we've not seen even a von neumann probe says a lot. either life is very rare for one reason or another or great pains are taken to hide from any potential competition.

Distance.

Radio has only traveled 200 light years so far, which is nothing in a single galaxy with 200-400 billion stars scattered over 200k light years. Ignoring the 2 trillion galaxies outside this one.

Even if intelligent life was extremely common in this galaxy, it would still be impossible to detect because of the distance unless extremely close by.

There have been some estimated using fancy math I don't understand. Someone's even worked out the probability of something as complex as a brain.

But there's a lot that can go wrong with finding aliens. The universe is stupidly big, the distances nearly impossible to travel. Even if space faring aliens exist the likelihood of them finding us and deciding that it's worth the visit is just too low.

Light hasn't reached them yet.

Even then they're just seeing earth just forming or seeing prehistoric earth.

Just like the way see things ourselves.

But as said earlier.

They'd have to be just wondering by and accidentally see us.

Just like Star Trek: First Contact.

Ehhh, while no proof either way, I don't believe life is THAT rare. Your examples put these aliens anywhere from the Andromeda Galaxy (seeing Earth 2.5 million years ago) to 5 billion light years away if they're seeing the formation of the planet.

Current estimate by NASA of the number of intelligent civilizations in this galaxy is 13 iirc. It would just be impossible to detect unless they're a few hundred light years away. So even if it was like 13,000 over 100-200k light-years, there would be nothing to really detect because how far footprints travel.

Right. We haven't been sending signals out for very long and the ones we have been sending out haven't made it very far. Aliens would need to be very close to receive any of our traffic. As unimaginably big as this universe is, they just don't know we're here.

I recall reading a article that they'd probably hearing scratchy signals from the 1930's.

TV from the 1950's.

Isn't there some movie where they're just now might be picking up episodes of The Honeymooners or the such?

That'd be crazy for us.

Picking up some David Lynch like shit from some TV show some distant planet was playing.

(edit)

Then again they'd might be seeing David Lynch like shit from us.

Radio signals travel at the speed of light. So they would only be recieving 1930s signals now if they're about 70 light years away.

If they're like 1k light-years away, it would take them another 910 years to recieve those 1930s signals.

If they're in the Andromeda Galaxy, it would take 2.5 million years.

Distance.

Even an intelligent alien civilization with a 100 million years of progression wouldn't be able to scout and travel to every galaxy.

There are at a minimum 10,000 stars for every grain of sand on earth.

Maybe whatever form of alien life that is closest to us is actually more primitive, or on the same level/only slightly more advanced than us. Its not like anyone can really say.
