It all depends on where you live.

I've lived in States where it was commony called "pop" and then moved to States where it was known as "soda".

I only call Coke Coke though. I'd never identity other sodas as that.

Apparently people in the Midwest say pop or soda pop

My parents both were raised in Oregon but I think both their families originally were in the Midwest so they picked up pop from my grandparents

I've always said soda though. Most people my age I have known all my life in various states, said soda too

I think pop is an old fashioned term kinda. Not so much 4 year olds say it but 80 year olds

I visited a friend who lives just outside the DFW area of Texas.

It was comical how they ordered their drinks when we went to dinner.

"I'll have a Coke"

"Ok, which kind?"

"Sprite."

I lived in Texas for a long time and I really don't remember hearing "coke" to refer to soda broadly, like... Ever. Everyone said soda and Dr Pepper was much more popular than Coke.

I wonder if they'd get mad if they came to California and "I'll have a Coke" resulted in actually getting handed a Coke lol.

We definitely do NOT call it coke unless it's indeed actual coke. ('-' )

Knowing that people use the term pop to describe soda is an embarrassment to English language. What the fuck are you doing?

Many years ago I went to Origins which is a game convention in Columbus, Ohio and a guy came up asked "where'd you get that pop?" and I was confused until he pointed to the drink in my hand.

I'm from the South and while I knew some regions said "pop" that was the first time I had actually heard someone refer to a soft drink as that.

It would make more sense to just cut off the pop part and say soda.

Generally called "soda" in my home of L.A. In the South (GA, AL, LA, TX) I have heard it called "coke". When asked what kind, they specified Sprite, Orange or whatever. I'm still legit surprised.

I've only heard "pop" in the Midwest.

10 years in New England and I only heard "soda".

YMMV.
