If there was a wikipedia article on something, it used to always be the top search result. Now I have to scroll through like 8 less helpful links to get to wikipedia.

Wikipedia tried to shame Google into donating money to them and Google wasn't about that.

Aren't Google results supposedly based on popularity, and not necessarily the "usefulness" of the site?

So that could be why.

I can literally edit any article on Wikipedia to say whatever I want.

I did this with a friend who didnt believe me like a decade ago. She was writing a paper on Abe Lincoln and I went to the page and wrote some random bullshit and told her to refresh.

She was shocked at how quickly a random person could change a Wiki page that easily.

Chances are, though, that the edit will be undone in a matter of hours, if not minutes.

You might be surprised to learn that things on that wiki have changed. Articles get protections and check cycles based on how popular they are, so you might be able to vandalize some obscure stub and have it last for some time though.

Thats what you think / assume. Nobody really knows how long it was up.

You made an edit, asked your friend to refresh the page, and that was that. For all we know, that edit stayed there for all of two minutes.

What kind of an edit did you make, though? Was it super blatant, like claiming Abe Lincoln was a turbocharged neutron hamster from Jupiter, or something harder to spot, such as an intentinal typo?

i've noticed this, too. when i want a wiki article i put 'wikipedia' into the search now.

Duck Duck Go sticks the wikipedia article right in the results sidebar.
