Does this higher death rate over birth worry you?

For the first time since 1900, More people DIED in Michigan in 2020 than were BORN after COVID-19 dramatically increased the number of deaths!!

The Michigan Dept of Health and Human Services shws that 117,087 people died in the year compared to 104,166 births

The death rate was driven by 11,362 covid deaths which is 6% higher than the 99,000 annual deaths was averaging for the last few eyars although experts say even without the pandemic the state would hit a similar death rate eventually within the next few years

Kurt Metzger, a demographer and director of Data Driven Detroit said "This is not a shock. We've been talking about this coming for some time now. We're at a point we have to do something about it"

It's shown that for decades Michigan has had a declining birth rate while deaths have risen. The birth rate peaked at 1957 when more than 208,000 babies were born but has been on a steady decline since

The total population also shrank and the natural decrease will be even bigger in 2021 with 17,000 fewer people in July 2021 than it did in July 2020

It could lead to economic issues making it difficult for the state to retain jobs and limiting steady stream of employees to run businesses

New companies will also not consider states that get smaller and opt for bigger populations for bigger returns as Michigan also lost a house seat because it was not growing as fast

Reynolds Farley said having a smaller population is not inherently bad but adjusting to it will be a tremendous challenge such as closing schools and combining districts

COVID-19 is driving the daily american death toll higher than it did during delta's wave despite being less lethal but because it causes more infections and more people to be infected will lead to more deaths.

The US is approaching 900,000 deaths where it is at right now 882,870 and the new Omicron variant is to blame as Andrew Noymer, a public health professor believes it will reach 1,000,000 in due time

Does the higher death rate than the birth rate worry you?

As they said, it was kind of inevitable regardless of Covid. Covid's hastened it along a bit, but the post-WWII Baby Boom happened 70-75 years ago. That means those people are getting toward the point of dying of simple old age. Covid's obviously throwing a wrinkle into it by killing a chunk of them off prematurely, but we can otherwise expect the death rate to accelerate for another 10-20 years.

On the flip side, birth rates are down partially because so many young people can't afford kids, and partially because many just plain don't want them and that's more socially acceptable now than ever before. Birth rates are especially low amid the considerable uncertainty of Covid, since a lot of families are holding off on having kids until things are more stable.

I'm mostly surprised Michigan of all places had a higher number of births than deaths each year for a century.

We should have less babies because we don't have any functioning governments or countries to sufficiently take care of new generations.
