Like can you watch the seasons with the 9th or 10th doctor without seeing the other preceding doctors?

I watched the first fourish seasons after the reboot. It was okay but not the amazing show a lot of fans hype it up to be.

Honestly, episodes feel very standalone. You can start from the reboot and work your way up. And I liked the series but its one of those hit or miss for me. I enjoyed it but not all of it. Matt Smith was definitely my favorite but it can be really corny at times.

You can probably jump in at the start of any doctor in the new series, but its good so why not start at the beginning?

I tried starting from the beginning and didn't like it. So then I jumped into the 2005 series that everyone says is a good starting point and I didn't like that either. I gave up on trying to get into Doctor Who after that

I tried starting with 9 and couldn't hack it, went to 11 and loved it. Later went back and watched 9-10 and *loved* them, but I'm not sure I would've stuck with it if I started there.

start with the episode called "Rose" and go from there. you'll miss the occasional reference, but it was designed to be a place to start for everyone. if you find you really like it, then you can go watch the older stuff.

There's interesting things and concepts in the series but I have never been able to get into it personally. It either clicks with you or it doesn't.

The 9th Doctor is where most start, but Eccleston can turn many off. You could just start with 10, which is only a season after. You could also start with 11 and go back to 9 and 10 later.

9th doctor is a great starting point. I went back later and cherry picked some episodes from previous doctors that people rated very highly, mostly just to get a feel for what each doctor was like.

I was done with the show during the 11th doctor's run though, and never got around to finishing it. I'll probably check out a couple of the 12th and 13th doctor's best episodes at some point.

I've tried to get I to it many times, but I just can't shake the feeling of... the pointlessness of it all.

I dunno. Just the knowledge that there's never gonna be an end to it, and that every single major arc is gonna end with the characters splitting and the protag getting slapped with a big ol' reset button over and over just really blocks me from getting invested.

I feel like I've only met one person in my life who has liked 13's run. I haven't seen any, but I haven't heard overwhelmingly good things.

it's been rough, but it's fine to watch once if you're already a fan of the show. not her fault, the writing has done no one any favors.

Jodie Whittaker is an excellent doctor, she's just been given pretty bad scripts for the most part.

I liked 3 of the guys I think. Never sat through and watched them all in order, but seen a ton of episodes over the years on sci-fi.

I would just say pick a dr you like and try their series.

any episode recommendations?

hmm

Deep Breath (debut ep)
Listen
Mummy on the Orient Express
The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar
The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion (my personal favorite "Doctor Speech") (you may want to watch The Day of the Doctor first, if you haven't. It's one of the last 11 stories. it's also excellent)
Heaven Sent (my pick for best Who episode, full stop. technically the middle episode of a loose 3-parter. it stands on its own, but feel free to watch the others -Face the Raven and Hell Bent- but they're a little more spoilery for that entire season.)
Extremis (a lead in to the follow up two parter, but standalone)
World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls/Twice Upon a Time (end of the run, Twice... is more of a swan song than a true part 3)

it's been a little while since i've seen them, so i don't promise that skipping through won't spoil some things i'm not thinking about. i will always recommend to just binge through it all. that's always a better experience, even if some of it is less good in hindsight.

The first revival season is a perfect starting point, because that entire season is a microcosm of the Doctor Who franchise.

You're introduced to the Doctor, a manic adventurer who constantly runs into trouble in his time machine. He has a perchant for picking up random travelling companions who accompany him on his travels, and beasts he often runs into include interplanetary ghosts, genocidal alien conquerers donning tactical armor, alien shapeshifters, a hivemind that can infect and control plastic, and occasionally the odd human being.

You're introduced to the Daleks, which are one of the most consequential alien foes the Doctor has ever faced. You meet Jack Harkness, who - until his actor's shitty antics were uncovered last year - was a beloved character in the show, and you become acquainted with all the toys in the Doctor's toybox - the biggest one being the sonic screwdriver, which opens doors as well as locking them and acts as something of a plot device when the Doctor needs to get out of a jam. And at the end, the Doctor regenerates into another person. It's a shakedown run for anyone who's not familiar with the series, and a nostalgic refresher for people who had missed the show in the 18 or so years it had been off the air. All the building blocks of the franchise are in that first revival series, and later seasons took that lead.and ran with it, introducing other classic monsters and characters as well as introducing new ones.

And while the first season has aged somewhat, it's still contemporary to a degree and it's down-to-earth in a way that makes it easier to get into the space adventures. Later seasons go full "sci-fi fairytale", especially once the showrunner changes, so the first season acts as a grounding point and the next seasons lean further into the time-travel and the intergalactic stuff as you get more and more immersed in the show's universe.
