It can be a moment in a game, something you saw about a game, a new piece of technology, etc.

I think for me, it was seeing a report on video game violence on the news. Id never seen Mortal Kombat 2 yet, but they were showing fatalities in the report. I saw Jaxs head smash & arm rip, and thought Holy shit, I must play this! Seriously, that news report on why kids shouldnt play it got me incredibly hyped about it.

I was gonna go with the first time I saw a commercial for the Power Glove, but I think that should be DQd because it was a POS that didnt work as advertised.

(Also thought of Mario flying in SMB3, but I dont think it wowed me. There was also the graphics of the floating continent going up in FF6, but that was after the MK2 thing).

I would say the environment graphics of ff7. Even the change from say snes mario to 64 didnt impress me that much.

Space station Silicon Valley might actually be the first game that wowed me though, being able to pop out and take control of all the enemies was excellent. That seemed more next gen to me than mario for some reason.

mild props to donkey Kong graphics on the snes as well

That was a long time ago. So, I want to say Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6.

Maybe even A Link to the Past.

Final Fantasy 7, Xenogears, Ocarina of Time, and Mario 64 were big wow factors in gaming for me too.

IG88 in that n64 star wars game. That was the first time I experienced competent AI, and he fucking rekt me (I could hear him clomping arpund somewhere but I couldn't find him. I was like "where the fuck is this asshole?" and wandered all over the arena looking for him. Suddenly he drops from some catwalk or something, right behind me. I was dead before I could even turn around).

I was playing the other day and found a great low level unique that I wanted for my druid to eventually use. I was thrilled. Then I noticed it was ethereal and my soul burst into tears :(

I was pretty young, but the intro scene in FF4 just grabbed me in a way that no other game before it had. I think I just hadn't really run into any other game that tried to tell that sort of story before that.

Definitely these. To this day, my brother and I still agree that our N64 was the best Christmas gift we've ever gotten. Can't even count how many hours we put into Mario 64. And watching the FFX intro at my buddy's house the day it came out was literally the reason I started playing RPGs. I bought a copy the next day and RPGs steadily became my favorite genre.

Probably a while later though...FF8. The opening FMV, the music, the presentation of the game in general.
