Or did you believe the initial "oh we just need to stay at home for 2 weeks teehee!" stuff?

When I saw that we had millions of people refusing to follow any sort of safety guidelines, I figured it was going to last longer than 2 weeks. I didn't think it would last 2 years, though.

I assumed people would be smart and take action to snuff it out fast. I didn't think a virus of all things would become the new political hot button and doom us all to misery for years to come.

Pretty much this. We have spiraled into a weird timeline.

not quite at first, i thought everyone would actually do what it took to get through it quickly (if for different reasons). though, i also expected everyone to be well compensated for doing so, too.

once it was clear that was magical fairy land, i expected it to be similar to the 1918 flu -- 26 months, and never truly gone.

I thought we were in for at least a year. It got a pretty strong start, turned untrackable quickly. First they gave it a head start by suppressing it, then people ran to hospitals and formed those superspreader queues for testing on top of everyone just scattering with it after Chinese new year.

I didn't anticipate anti-vaxxers walling everyone else this badly though. I thought they mostly ran on fear and seeing a few deaths would get a lot of them to change.

My worst-case scenario prediction even then was that this would last years, assuming that it ever went away at all. But I had some short-lived optimism at the time that went something like this: 'this is finally it. This will be the event that will finally wake people up to Trumpism. The American people won't stand for that level of gross incompetence when it's their own lives that are finally on the line. This will be the event that will finally start unifying us as a nation.'

I figured the pandemic would probably take about 2 years to fully run it's course since that's how long the Spanish Flu pandemic lasted. If Omicron ends up being the last major variant and COVID just becomes another run-of-the-mill cold after this, then 2 years will be about right.

My coworker said "well, see you in like a month!" going out the door the last day before the mandatory remote, implying that was a long time.

I only went into the office for one day after that, and the pandemic ended up outlasting the work contract

I'm really not sure how you "can guarantee you nobody is going to still have their lives uprooted from this" when 882,000 people in the US alone have died because of covid. That's a lot of families who have lost loved ones, including orphaned kids.

I lived through 9/11 and remembered how the nation came together and unified. I was ignorant to assume that we would come together again and do the right thing, but instead are one of the worst nations on the planet for cases and people refusing to make any kind of effort to end this. So no, I didnt anticipate this lasting this long and half our nation would act like children about it, including our leaders.

Depends.

Did I think I would telework for 2 years? No. Thought I had a few months tops and they'd force me back. Happy to be wrong.

Did I think covid however was going away? Not with 40% of the country calling it a Democrat hoax or "only as bad as the flu" or antimask/antivax.

Do people really believe that people were going to follow these restrictions or is it just a vague way of saying people were dumb if they didnt

Idk how a grown adult would believe that

My last day in the office was 3/16/20. We were told early that morning that day it would be our last in the office, so we spent the rest of the day talking about what was happening.

My prediction was by April we have a 2 month nationwide lock down, restrictions ease in the summer, summer is mostly normal though maybe only like a quarter to half the people in the office at a given time. Then September through March 2021 would be the actual worst of it, summer of 2021 being 90% normal and then maybe small outbreaks this cold and flu season.
