It had been so long since I had seen the first 3. I was fuzzy on some of the details, so I figured I would go through all of them again.

I think the first one is still my favorite. The 4th was just OK.

I re-watched the first 2 recently.

In retrospect, I think I actually prefer the 2nd one on a re-watch. It's dumb as shit, but it's quicker moving, has several fantastic action scenes, and isn't quite as aged, visually.

Didn't care for the 4th much at all but don't think it's as much a train wreck as people say, but not really gonna defend it either. I've actually still never seen the 3rd, lol. I will get to it.

I was considering that route going into the 4th release, glad I didn't...did not care for the 4th one at all.

2 is my favorite

action movie-wise... the chateau fight, the twins, and the chase scene right after are one of the best 20 minute sequences of all time

I enjoyed all 5 matrix features.

I'd go 1 >>>> Ani >>>> 2 >> 3 > 4 = ok

The Matrix is clearly the best, but Reloaded and Revolutions are a lot better than their reputations would lead you to believe. Certainly better than most other blockbusters we get nowadays.

The only good thing about Resurrections is that it treated the original movies/characters with respect, didn't make the old movies pointless or shit all over fan favorite characters. Otherwise it was very meh action, and the story didn't really add any new or important stuff, just a pointless sequel. I think Lana Wachowski was clearly aware that the sequel was pointless and did not have her heart in it, but the meta jokes she put in just felt forced and were cringeworthy.

Revolutions is not good at all. Like, Reloaded is a bad movie but you guys still defend it because of 20 minutes of action. Revolutions is straight up bad with no redeeming qualities.

I thought it had a few positives and a lot of negatives.
  • Waited way too long to make it
  • New Morpheus and New Agent Smith were really bad, imo

I liked the newer technology they incorporated into it and the advancements that other villain guy was able to make... But that was about it.

I mostly agree with this. Revolutions was horribad. Reloaded was only entertaining for the action sequences, though it did a fine job of being a "middle" movie and setting up a finale that ended up being hot steaming garbo.

Personally, I'd go with 1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2 > 4 >>>>>>>> blue pill >>>> 3

I'll take Reloaded 20 mins of action over most action movies tbh.

And the soundtrack.

Revolutions had the Architect. It also had blind Neo doing anomaly stuff in the real world outside the Matrix. What it doesn't have... is the shitty CGI used in the Smith fight in Reloaded and sequences like when the Agent jumps on the hood of a car, smashing it to bits during the highway chase sequence (also in Reloaded). Visually anyway, Revolutions is superior. 2 had its moments tho.

Neither are anywhere near the level of quality and class of the first one on just about any level. What they were trying to do was establish a new multimedia franchise similar to how the prequel trilogy of Star Wars launched boatloads of its own stuff. This is evidenced by the games, cartoons, comics, and merchandise that came out around Revolutions and Reloaded.

I liked 4 tho. Neil Patrick Harris was really effective, and him being a comedian added a lot to the concept of trying to break down Neo's ego, for me at least. I liked nu Smith & fake Morpheus. I liked the new human city in the real world, the machines using nanotech stuff to give the programs a body in the real world. Actually, the practical effects were pretty awesome. Nothing like the first movie, but it's a great place to end the saga started by Reloaded. At least we have some degree of closure.

Their handling of bringing back Neo & Trinity was dope. I won't spoil anything lol. When they show exactly how the characters returned, as part of a twist later, I loved it. That's very Matrix, for me. Body horror. I expected a lot more but it gave me enough of what I wanted that im willing to give the movie two thumbs up. I would have fused Neo & Trinity into one glorious androgynous entity at the end of the movie. For me, it was hard to swallow the familiar beat they went with at the end, which was mostly centered around comedy. On the other hand, they opened it up for another sequel in a cool way.

Would actually be down for a Matrix 5

I didn't love Resurrections, but I did love the closure it brought me. It was almost as satisfying as the ending of Days of Future Past. Neo and Trinity sharing the power (and responsibility) of The One feels like an ending that could have been in the original trilogy, and would have been way more satisfying than what revolutions gave us.

What? The Architect was in 2. Did he have some scene in 3 I forgot about? That pretentious monologue he has was awful too, so I'm not sure why you're mentioning him.

You're right. That was Reloaded, but yeah he had scenes in Revolutions as well.

Neither of them were terribly respectable

The action scenes in Reloaded are dope and still hold up to this day. Hell, they are better than most action movies today. I especially like how they are not afraid to use an intense soundtrack to enhance the action. So many modern movies are scared to do that.

I'm in the process of watching the original trilogy now with my gf before starting the new one. I saw the first one many times (in parts, never all the way through in 1 setting) as a kid so naturally I didn't understand much of what was going on. We just finished Reloaded either last night or the night before. Honestly, I thought Jada would have a much bigger role in the movie since she was the main character in the PS2 game.

Hearing about Resurrections makes it sound like a super transparent attempt by the directors to kill off Matrix sequel attempts.

As they should.
