The indigenous monument, known as Huaco Erotico, was erected in the Peruvian town of Trujillo to mark the start of 2022.

It took locals and passing drivers by surprise and they soon flocked round for some selfies.

But it clearly didnt go down well with some people.

Mayor Arturo Fernandez said three hooded thugs armed with knives threatened to kill a security guard before smashing a big hole in the bright red member.

The mayor said a local plastics artist donated the statue to celebrate Moche culture, which flourished in northern Peru 1,900 years ago.

He said: In our culture, it does not represent eroticism but faith to God. In addition, sexuality must be seen as something normal and natural.

Huaco is the Peruvian term for earthen vessels and other pottery works by indigenous people of the Americas. They are often found in ancient burial sites and temples.

The Moche civilisation lived in northern Peru between 100 AD and 700 AD, and its capital was near the present-day Moche.

Its citizens developed a strong tradition of ceramic work, creating figurines, and engineering feats including building irrigation canals and dams for agriculture.

Its not the first phallic statue to cause a bit of a stir in recent day. A four-metre long statue of a potato was toppled by vandals in Cyprus.

Locals called it the Big Potato when it was unveiled last October, but it soon became a viral star for looking like the veined shaft of something quite rude.
