There's a streamer I like (Lorerunner) who streams for something like 11 hours a day six days a week. Fuck that. I can barely enjoy games for a few hours a day, let alone having to engage with them to have to get money to live.

If it keeps a roof over your head, and food on the table, it's a job.

Not really any different than being at the mercy of a boss though

As weak as labor laws are, they're still vastly more useful against getting fired than being demonetized.

There is a lot of behind the scenes work that you have to do to be a streamer. Maybe some do less than others I guess. But the big time streamers are very hard working. Like the vtubers of HoloLive

If someone has a marketable skill or trade, another employer would be looking to hire them. Not sure how easy it is to switch websites or apps and retain a streaming fanbase, but it seems a little more risky.

Part of it is that you have to be able to engage with the public and and entertaining for hours on end. Some of them sometimes do "Endurance streams". Recently I think 2 Hololive girls each streamed together for like 12 hours, while they both hunted a shiny Pokmon

They had to talk that entire time

Yeah it takes a certain skill to do. Painting a masterpiece is "hard to do", but it's certainly not hard work.

It's a real job, but it's not a real stable job. Consider the level of skill it takes to be one of the top streamers for a competitive FPS... and then consider the age at which your reflexes take a noticeable dropoff. Even if you're the best of the best when you're 21, by the time you're 35, your reflexes are going to have dulled and there's always a crop of fresh 21 year olds to take your place.

Also, think of just the way tastes change. Hell, just look at how the enigmatic "algorithm" changing can completely screw over once wildly successful channels. You don't want to be 40 and suddenly get "fired" with nothing to fall back on.

It's really just a strong argument for why we should have UBI.

no job is stabele your always at the behest of some person who can change their opiinon on a whim or even worse robots replaacing everyone in every profession being a streamer means you know how to create and promote content so you can always make your own money somehow

It's a real job the way the Cat in the Hat is a real book: meets the technical requirements, but playing video games and / or jibber jabbering about shit for hours for tips isn't up there with things that have strong technical skills, expectations, and knowledge required.

That's just delusional, my dude. There are plenty of jobs that are stable and are going to continue to be stable for years to come.

Some jobs just aren't stable or viable long-term. Have a back-up plan.
