The maximum you should be allowed to charge for renting a 1-bedroom space should be 25% of a month's pay in minimum wage.

40 * 7.25 = 290 maximum you are allowed to charge by law.

Additional bedrooms can add up to 20 hours of minimum wage pay (half again as much)

435 for a 2-bedroom. 580 for a 3-bedroom, and so on.

If minimum wage is higher in your state, the calculations would scale accordingly.

It would be a start.

I like all the right-wing landlords that don't have a problem cashing the government check from their tenents on government assistants.

It's bizarre how fantasistical and out of touch CE is when it comes to this subject. But a lot of the users here make under $29K a year and still live at home, so I guess it makes sense. Rent is unfairly high though, I agree on that part of the subject.

There shouldn't be a minimum wage/any government welfare/rent control/public housing and prices for rent as well as everything else would go down, and there would be job opportunities for anybody. The economic system we have is not good as you see right now. You have interest rates at 0%, the federal reserve monetizing the debt to fund our domestic welfare and our military empire. The result is inflation that is incredibly high, probably the worse in US history.

People don't care about big government, but as government grows, the more it makes us poorer. And it's an economic system that benefits the rich and well to do, that's the irony. And our educational system, just abolish the damn thing.

Never gonna happen in a capitalist society.

Also, your calculations are factually off. 4.3 weeks in a month.

If this were to happen, I wonder if that would end up with less/no landlords in turn flooding the market with cheap houses or land for sale. Then nobody would rent anymore because it is not worth it as a landlord and houses are cheap as a normal person.

The basic problem with rent control is that its attacking the problem from the wrong direction. The rent goes up when the demand for places to rent exceeds the supply. If you cap the rent then people that have an apartment will be happy for a while but the actual problem of there not being enough housing will get steadily worse because private investors will stop building apartment complexes.

Which leads you to ask "well why can't we just have the government build apartment complexes?" which leads us back to the disaster of urban housing projects that were built in the decades after WW2 and mostly torn down within a generation of being built because they turned into hell holes.

Self-sufficient isnt really a thing. We all rely on hundreds of thousands of people every day to live the lifestyles we do.

Also, rent is market failure. Someone is being paid money without producing anything.

so if that is a luxury 1-bedroom with granite countertops, ultra fancy appliances, decked out with ammenities, you're saying the landlord shouldn't be allowed to charge more than some maximum? the price of rent for that "luxury" apartment in the heart of downtown should be the same as the rent in a shit hole in the ghetto?

i appreciate the intent of your idea but this is not how to achieve it. we just need more government owned housing.
