Like it is okay I guess, especially for its age, but compared to modern fantasy novels it is pretty mediocre.

Strange pacing (some chapters are decades long and others are short), inconsistent and mostly unexplained magic system, poor character development. And then the second half is totally different than the first. In general each section seems wildly different than the others. Like I get it was a collaborative piece made by a team, but the team should have worked a little more closely to piece together a more consistent story.

How does such a bland fantasy novel retain such popularity for so long?

Agnosticism is a tool to help deprogram brainwashed cultists. Why are we injecting our negative feelings into the equation? Does your cosmological model include roasting? Do tell.

Probably my second favorite character. I feel like it would have been a bit better if Moses's(my favorite character) story was fleshed out a bit more

You can tell they didn't really know how to wrap up the saga, either. It doesn't end, it just sort of stops.

I guess that could be it. In high school English class we had to read The Scarlet Letter, which I thought was the worst book I have ever read, but I guess for its time it was brilliant so it has sort of locked itself in as a classic even though much better novels in the genre have released since then.

The scarlet letter isn't genre fiction. Don't know why I'm writing this since it's a joke topic but just want to make sure nobody is confused

Where is the word "fiction" in that entire post?

I said that there are better novels in the same genre as Scarlet Letter, but it is still considered a classic. I never made a claim to what genre that is.

...I'm not saying that fiction is a genre or anything. I'm saying that the Scarlet Letter doesn't have a genre. When you use the term genre in the way you're using it, you're implying Hawthorne wrote the book with the intention of fitting in to a genre to appeal to readers. The Scarlet Letter isn't made to be a thriller or a romance novel or what have you.

All novels are fiction by definition.

Just because it wasn't written to be fit a specific genre doesn't mean it doesn't fit into any genres.

The issue at hand is that you said 'better books in its genre have come out' when Scarlet Letter's point isn't to be a good piece of genre fiction. It's Hawthorne making a statement about humanity and the human condition. That's why it's read in schools.

Oh you're right no other books make a statement about humanity and the human condition, my mistake.

There are and many of them are taught in schools, but no the average thriller or romance etc is not exactly profound.

Never read it, so I couldn't really say. It is quite popular though, so I'd assume it is also overrated.

And almost all the other typical high school English classic novels are more interesting reads than Scarlet Letter. Maybe not "profound" in the same way as Scarlet Letter, but novels like Lord of the Flies, 1984, Heart of Darkness, Red Badge of Courage, Catch in the Rye, Grapes of Wrath, Brave New World all have an important message and are actually interesting the read.

Scarlet Letter is only still read in high school English classes for one reason. It is easy. There is a lot of blatant symbolism that lazy teachers can spend and entire week of class on. It has been taught for decades so they can just print out their same old tests, quizzes, and writing prompts and sit around doing nothing.

It's not necessarily popular because it's well written, but because it's basically a required book reading if you're in a Abrahamic religion, you like the ones you have to read during the summer for highschool.
