I actually think that's really smart. It's only once a month, and it forces the developers to actually engage with the interface they're creating in the way an end user would. I guarantee this will result in a better app for drivers.

It also keeps the devs from turning into entitled ninnies.

I don't blame him, it was clearly not in his job description and I don't think employers should suddenly be changing what is part of your job. If they made it a voluntary program employees could do while on the clock, I would understand it more.

Actually, yes:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2021/12/29/doordash-food-deliveries-engineers-executives-ceo/9045901002/
DoorDash will require all employees, including its engineers, corporate executives and CEO Tony Xu, to complete deliveries at least once a month after reinstating its WeDash program. And an anonymous social media post revealed at leastone of the company's employees isn't happy about it.

EDIT: Also, apparently this is how it was done pre-covid and it was only ever temporarily suspended because of the pandemic, so the employee who complained has to have been hired only in the last year or two.

People's jobs get change everyday. The Dasher's jobs have changed quite a bit from inception to now. the CEO's weren't complaining about changing job descriptions then. Why now?

Lol you know so little of the tech market, let alone the Bay Area where DD is based. These engineers are hit up by a dozen recruiters a day, conservatively. They can find another job easy, and make more money too. If they arent interested in driving around delivering food, even if once a month, they wont. My husband is in tech and jumped ship just because they implemented one day a week in the office. People hate dealing with traffic and WFH for almost 2 years has solidified that to people.

Nah, I'd find it more stressful than working at home on code, tbh. I wouldn't like it either especially if it interrupts other work I could be doing.

That being said, it is a good test of the UI and systems in place. It will lead to improvements most likely, so I get why this policy is a thing.

You seem confused to think this is an employers market. DD is being dumb given the kind of talent they employ. They have solid software engineers that other companies are more than willing to take on, offer more money to, full remote and no monthly deliveries. $400k for a Bay Area software engineer is pretty standard.

Im not an engineer but Im well sought after in the market. If my company imposed monthly deliveries, I would jump ship so fast.

It's weird that people here will side with the multi millionaire executives thinking they are geniuses while pushing this phony culture crap instead of the lower corporate employees, even though I get they are doing very well financially in a vacuum.

I don't like it. Like this trend of companies rounding up their employees to be in Tik Toks. Most people want to make a living and just be serious about their job stop making it harder.

Except the pandemic changed everything. Its a candidates market now. People are far less willing to do things they had to do before once they stopped having to. Most of the candidates I talk to are on the market for a new job because their company wants them back in the office. Even just for a couple of days.

Oh no, Im well aware that it is not an employers market now. And sure, I will admit to being a bit biased here since I do drive for DD and UE on the side and have been doing so for a year and a half. So that is why, to me, it seems like an employee getting bent out of shape over this is somewhat of an extreme reaction. I completely get leaving over having to go into the office one day a week and dealing with that, but this is just different, to me anyway.

That said, I have qualms with how DD treats drivers and plays games with offer amounts anyway and actually do support folks sticking it to them. If this is enough to cause a mass exodus and it hurts them, then I certainly wont be losing sleep over it on behalf of DD. But lets face it, every place has their share of BS to deal with and its possible that folks jumping ship from DD to another place over this could, in fact, end up finding something just as obnoxious or aggravating to them at the next place.

Or not, who knows? Gotta do what you gotta do I suppose.

The thing rarely if ever done in this case consists of driving to a grocery store or restaurant, picking up items, and driving them to another location. I would argue that most people in the US who have cars have done this in some form or fashion repeatedly.

I could understand the argument against this if the C-level executives weren't doing it and the lower level employees all had to do it...

But if even the CEO is doing it, the engineer can get over him or herself and do it, too.
