Where it went: Aliens, superpowers, and a virtual simulation

Saints Row is wild.

Eh it was cool while it lasted same with GTA.

Saints Row 2 was fun as hell as an alternative to boring a** GTA4.

SR decided to ramp up the wackiness in 2, but they kinda caught themselves in a trap of having to go further and further over the top with each game. They couldn't just make good games, each one had to be outrageous

Admittedly, it was the superpowers in SR4 that got me interested in the first place. Had the series stuck with its more grounded roots even with the overall zaniness, I doubt I would have even given the series a second look.

It's also why I'm not really interested in the reboot.

it gave the series its own identity. without the wackiness it would just be another GTA clone

Agreed, I played the first one and thought it was boring as fuck so I skipped the second one. I played and finished 3 and 4 because they were so over the top. I know the series' fans bemoan that change but it worked for me.

SR2 is great but the series needed something to set it apart from GTA especially since GTA5 was looming on the horizon before Saints Row 3 was made

SR3 and SR4 were fun, but I don't think they were as good as SR2. Part of that is that SR3 just genuinely wasn't as fun to play as SR2 though.

Even the first game was wacky and didn't take itself super seriously. You could even have a zombie companion at one point. But yeah, they definitely dialed it up more and more with each new entry.

I liked SR3 but I felt like a lot of the missions were just making you do the minigames

It was.

That was one thing I didn't like about it. SR2 had a new cutscene explaining why you were doing each minigame, SR3 just had you do them.

Everything about SR3 seemed so cheap compared to SR2.
Also the map was such a Liberty City ripoff

Same. 4 was fun but too over the top. Wish it was a spin off or another IP

Was it SR3 that introduced dildo-bashing or did that occur earlier than I thought?

It was the first game with the dildo bat. Although I don't remember if the earlier games had just a dildo.
