As a kid it was like: Look at all of these marvellous creatures, the world is an endless parade of wonders

Now it's like: Look at all of these marvellous creatures, there's 90% less of them than when I started my film career and all the bad is accelerating

Tbh I think it's a hugely important message because it shows the real cost of climate change but man, sometimes I just want to see a funny bird do a dance :(

If David Attenborough can't get us to protect the environment, then no one can.

Oh yeah, I agree with the message wholeheartedly.

For one thing, something that pisses me off about climate change deniers is they never think of the consequences beyond the fucking weather.

If you can, by all means.

Anyway, obviously one person can only do so much, but a whole lot of one persons can make a bigger impact. There's a ton of stuff people do in their daily life that can affect the environment.
Making a few adjustments to one's habit can for instance save a lot of power (and sometimes money too) and result in less emission.

Aye, it's crazy when you think back to just how positive his older documentaries were.

He clearly still has a passion for what he does now, but there's a true sadness to his voice now that makes it harder to enjoy his content. I don't mean that in a bad way at all, more so that he may not see the change he'd love to see before his time comes and that's quite a sad / depressing thought in all honesty.

Atten is a national treasure and I appreciate everything he's done over the years.

I feel like we jumped ahead several argument modules here. To clarify, are you 1) denying that the climate is changing, 2) that humans have anything to do with it, 3) that anything can be done about it, 4) that we don't have any responsibility to mitigate the effects, or 5) the only problem is that it affects the weather

It must be truly devastating to dedicate your life's work to the amazing habitats, ecosystems and creatures of the world, and then watch most of it get absolutely decimated within your lifetime, up close and personal

None of those. I want things to change too but its very very discouraging that apparently global warming is happening even if we got rid of every car tomorrow.

And if I say that someone will just say "oh so you're not gonna try at all? You're a piece of shit."

Didn't say that either. It's not that I don't think I can make a difference (when we all work together) but our difference does not seem like it's enough. Cars and everything else are a necessity and they're fucking the world no matter what. Every day. That's not going to change.

You missed the epic breakdown Attenborough had 8 years ago in a BBC interview when he went total doomer. He said these majestic ecosystems can't be saved, he's just dedicating his final years to recording what's left so that future generations can see what was lost.

I agree that quite likely it is gonna get bad, no matter what we do at this point. I do believe however we can make a difference in exactly how bad it's gonna get. We do have a (limited) ability to do what we can as individuals in many ways, and can inspire others to do so as well (as opposed to forcing/shaming them). That can give a certain satisfaction and hopefully positive effect as well.

Gotta get that B-roll for the suicide centers because stressed meat makes for a lousy batch of Soylent Green.

But for real, I think part of it could have also been the sorrow of his older brother Richard having died only a few months earlier.
