Do you like A Christmas Story?

Im old so I had the movie on VHS before TBS shoved it down our throats. As a kid I loved it but by the time it went to 24 hours on TBS I kinda disliked it. This year Im watching it for the first time in like a decade and I actually like it again.

No, but I never watched it when I was younger. I saw it for the first time when I was in my 30s, so the nostalgia isnt there for me.

Id imagine most people who saw it as a kid love it.

Now that I'm older, I appreciate how good Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon are in that movie.

i saw it in the theaters as a young adult. a bunch of friends were in town, and we decided to go see a movie. i said all i wanted was a movie where no one got shot in the head. from the blurbs, a christmas story was the only one that qualified. no one knew anything about it; we were kinda hoping it would either be not bad, or else really bad.

we loved it! SPOILERS It cracked us up no end that even in that "safe" movie, ralphie still got shot in the head

I do like it, but it's kinda a weird watch nowadays bc I realize there's not really a plot. Just the fault song some stuff and then it ends.

I kinda feel the same way about the Sandlot. Until they lose the ball to the beast, it's just kinda a slice of life movie about kids playing baseball.

Yes.

It's not one that I grew up with. I saw it for the first time six years ago and I've seen it three times since. I still like It's a Wonderful Life, Die Hard, and Miracle on 34th Street better. But I do appreciate A Christmas Story more and more each time I see it.

It just has a universal quality to it. It's hard not to be immediately taken in with the self-depreciating opening narration of, "There I am with my stupid glasses and dumb round face." We've all looked back at a photograph or video of our younger selves and had a similar response. It's impossible not to feel some overlap with what one or more of the characters have gone through.

Maybe you're the parent who worried about their child being bundled up. Maybe you were the kid who dealt with bullies or had that holy grail present you wished for. Maybe you had the dad who thought he knew everything about repair and got mad when it wasn't as easy as he thought it would be. Maybe you had the annoying sibling -- or were the annoying sibling. There's something in that film which anyone watching that movie will have had in his or her life at some point.

Above all else, I think that's why the film is so cherished. It's a baseline good movie, but it's the universal experience quality that makes it the classic it is.

No. I've seen it so many times that I can't stand it anymore. Every line has been burned into my brain. It's actually traumatic for me to watch it at this point.

Watching this scene at my friend's house whose parents were both first-generation Hmong immigrants (1st gen Vietnamese dad/1st gen Chinese mom) when I was 6 was probably the funniest experience I'll ever have watching a movie.

The little brother whining "Raaaalphieee!" and other things constantly makes me wanna to choke myself out. My parents have to watch that movie every single year when they do Christmas dinner.
