It's a pastime of the sport but why?

Sometimes it's necessary to make people miserable, even if that means making yourself miserable in the process.

It's also the league where they're somewhat allowed and expected. In other sports leagues, it's an auto-suspension for everyone involved.

Because they get the lowest ratings of the 4 main sports.
They need what they can get so they allow fights.

Variety of reasons. Settling differences, standing up for teammates, punishment for cheap play and dirty hits. Theres a code to it.

It think they allow it because if they didn't, players would just find a way to "accidentally" slide into each other instead, which might cause worse injuries than just letting them wail on each other through padded clothing.

Its mostly because refereeing culture in hockey has a fairly loose let em play tendency, and usually try to keep penalties more or less even in a given match, barring penalties that dont involve referee discretion. Fights, theoretically, allow players to keep each other honest when they feel the refereeing hasnt done enough to protect their teammates.

This. We could have football fights too if it became the norm and made ratings go up.

I always found it odd. How about not fight at all? If your excuse is, well better they have it out now rather than let it explode into something even worse...that doesn't sound very sporting.

they just did a dirty play that injured or could have injured your teammate. ref did not call a penalty. you stand up for your teammate to let them know it is not tolerated, and that they won't get away with it.

Yep. It's the game policing itself, as it should.

Honestly letting them face off and blow off the steam that way is less dangerous than the inevitable dirty hit that will happen if they don't.

They should go to the same penalty box so they can make out with each other that'd be cool

There's been a few times where (i remember reading this in somebody's book) where a rookie wanted to fight one of the veterans right after a faceoff. He wanted to make a good impression with his coach and said he wanted to not get sent back to the minors, and the vet with no maliciousness said sure kid, and away they went throwing bombs at each other.

Somehow a thing that gives you a penalty ended up with people going "How much can we get away with on purpose?" to the point that teams have "The guy who is on there to beat people up mostly". Imagine if beating the shit out of each other as a strategy showed up in other games. If you're about to lost an important piece in a chess match leap over the board and slam his head on the ground over and over.

And in doubles tennis one player would be there to play tennis and the other would be there to vault the net and start beating the shit out of your opponents with the racket when you start losing.
