have read this a lot, that gamers care alot more than movie goers about professional reviews, from critics obv.

as a gamer, you're investing more time and money into something than you are as a moviegoer, so you're likelier to want some kinda positive sign (like glowing reviews) before you dive into something.

Movie is 2 hours of time and $10 for a ticket

Game is 20-60+ hours, $60

There's other factors, but ultimately you can forgive a mediocre movie but nobody wants to play a mediocre game for such a length of time

mediocre movie is easier to digest than a mediocre game.

this made me think; are there even any "cult" games?

i guess the only one i can think of would be something like deadly premonition
