Fiction portrays them as sympathetic characters having a code of honor. These guys were bloodthirsty, greedy, and downright evil.

Pirates were like gangsters/cartel.

Black Sails has a good balance between portraying some of them as having a "code" and such, while not sugar-coating the awful shit they did as well, as well as showing said pirates with that "code" doing awful things to achieve their ideals. Great show.

Sounds like a good show. Pirates of the Caribbean makes Jack Sparrow seem pure good.

I highly recommend it. I think it has what you're looking for; It's a much more gritty and realistic take on Pirates than POTC.

I learned everything I need to know about pirates from One Piece.

I 2nd Black Sails. I normally don't fucking TOUCH western shows unless they are comedies, but Black Sails is great.

I think Pirates of the Caribbean has some influence from real life. Like Im pretty sure there was a real life brethren court and stuff like that. But 98% of it or even more than that is obviously made up. There were probably a few well off pirates but most were probably just scum living outside the governments influence, just ships of homeless bum thieves essentially.

Black Sails has great opening music and plenty of hot babe nude scenes, do also recommend for these reasons beyond the p good story it has.

Admittedly I was disappointed in blackboard tho.

Eh, I liked their take on Blackbeard. It was very different, but I thought it worked.

Also, (EXTREMELY MAJOR SPOILERS FOR BLACK SAILS):
He has one of the most bad ass death scenes I've ever seen in television. It's fucking incredible.

Yea that scene was fucking incredible. I just disliked his whole father figure mentality towards Vane, very unpirately imo. I liked how the character was written tho.
