Pretty great video. Basically:

1. Looks like low budget and short development time really hurt the game
2. No unique or interesting game modes, no voices, extremely generic sound effects, terrible music, very basic character interactions
3. Levels are either very basic or have such game breaking mechanics that even casuals don't play on them
4. Move sets are just copy/pasted across most characters, pretty much the same startup/end lag on every attack type, so they feel the same, no variety.
5. Some move sets make no sense for their characters
6. Lots of characters air attacks are the exact same as their grounded attacks
7. Offense is way over powered, there are pretty much 0 defensive options once you are getting combo'd. Just hope you use your 1 air dash and get out of disadvantage, or else GG stock.
8. Projectiles and zoning is pretty much useless, so the entire competitive strategy is just spam as many attacks as possible and hope you get the first hit. Basically all the issues with Melee turned up to 11, and none of the positives.

There's just no character or style to it. Smash oozes character. That's where all of these clones fail. It could be a better game mechanically (dunno if it is, haven't played it but it doesn't look like it is tbh) but if it doesn't have character no one will give a fuck.

I don't know that it requires a whole video. Nickelodeon tried to fart out a cash grab melee clone that had no budget behind it and the game accidentally exploded in popularity. The developers never had a chance to make a real game but were suddenly in a position where people were excited well beyond their capability to deliver. Then the game came out and it was the same shovelware trash that every other Nickelodeon game since the dawn of time has been and people moved on.

Edit: just look at all the other Nick games that are featured right alongside this.

I mean it is made by the Slap City devs. That game felt really good to play. But it has some of the same flaws as this one does. Its entirely a budget and Nick doesnt want to let us play ball kind of deal from what a dev is saying on Twitter

They are getting voice acting and cleaning the game up in the future though. Who knows how much that will translate into future sales tho

To be clear, I'm definitely not blaming the devs. I'm aware of their pedigree and I'm sure they're just as frustrated to be in this position, but the idea that Nickelodeon games was suddenly going to push out AAA competitor to one of the most popular games of all time was always a pipe dream.

The developers want it to be a good game but Nickelodeon is giving them a small budget and not a lot of freedom.

Mostly the lack of voice acting and SFX work sunk it. Even VA work aside, melee's sound effects are head and shoulders above NASB.

Melee had/has broad appeal outside of the competitive scene. The lack of polish on NASB pretty much insured that wouldn't be the case for it.
