The United States passed another grim Covid-19 milestone Monday, as more than 800,000 Americans have now died from the virus that's plagued the country for nearly two years.

There have been at least 800,156 confirmed deaths traced to the coronavirus, according to a rolling tally by NBC News.

That's more than in any other nation, and more than the population of Boston, Washington, D.C., or Seattle.

This number is expected to increase Monday as more state and local health departments update their data.

Thirty-three states and the U.S. Virgin Islands have seen an increase in deaths over the last 14 days, NBC News data shows.

The previous 100,000 jump in deaths happened in 119 days, while the jump from 700,000 to 800,000 happened in 74, according to NBC News analysis.

Its a very sad moment, its mind-boggling, said Dr. Michael Rodriguez, vice chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. Were beyond numb.

Rodriquez, who practiced in San Francisco during the AIDS crisis of the 1990s, said he struggles to grasp the enormity of 800,000 deaths.

According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the seven-day death average in the U.S. was 1,092, a 27.8 percent increase from the week before.

The virus claimed its first known American victims in February 2020. When President Joe Biden took office on Jan. 20, the Covid death toll was at 403,596.

Dr. Vin Gupta, a critical care pulmonologist and affiliate associate professor at the University of Washington, said he fears the pandemic isnt close to slowing down. He expects the U.S. death toll to reach 1 million at some point in 2022.

Thats just the reality of the situation, he said. The same people who didnt get an initial shot wont get boosters. Its a lot of preventable death.

In total, the U.S. has recorded nearly 50 million cases since the pandemic began.

About 64 percent of those age 5 and older have received two doses of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines or one dose of the single-jab Johnson & Johnson.

Last month, the CDC strengthened its recommendations about booster shots, advising everyone over 18 to get a booster six months after their second Pfizer or Moderna shot or two months after their Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Vaccines have proven to be safe, effective and accepted by a majority of Americans.

However, vaccine hesitancy among a significant minority of the country has led to a "pandemic of the unvaccinated," health officials have repeatedly said, with both the delta and omicron variants continuing to spread.

"Technology has been important, but it's not been enough," Rodriguez said. "Unfortunately there has been this politicization that's resulted in massive misinformation."

Deaths are a lagging statistic. Cases will spike first, deaths will spike later. Cases are a better metric to determine how fucked we are in the future. Deaths let us know how fucked we are now.

This. We like to put all the blame on the vocally militant anti-vaxxers, but the more casual 'I am soooo over this pandemic' crowd proved in Spring 2021 how they can be just as much a part of the problem.

Anti-vaxxers are definitely instrumental in the continued spread and different variants, though it got out of control mainly because of the "Covid is a hoax" and "If I get corona I get corona" crowds.

I feel like a better understanding of natural selection could have changed things significantly with the "I'd rather have natural immunity" crowd. It's like.

No you don't get it. You don't "get" natural immunity. You already have it. You get COVID and if your natural immunity is good enough you live, otherwise you die.

Well... While it's still dumb AF, "natural immunity" in this regard refers to the immunity you get after having covid. Trying to justify the argument that "natural immunity is better than vaccine immunity" is still dumb AF even if that's the case.

You're still rolling the dice with your life and your health by trying to get covid without being vaccinated in order to have natural immunity against it.

I remember the old days when people compared covid deaths to vehicle accidents, gun related deaths, heart attack deaths, cancer deaths, etc.

Yeah, and it's based on a fundamental misunderstanding (shocker) of what was in the CARES act of 2020. That bill designated extra funding for hospitals to treat covid patients, not to declare more covid deaths.

My work has 14 positive cases of the virus. Also I'm not surprised at the number of deaths because of the people who refuse to get vaccinated even though they aren't allergic.
