It's tedious, but it's a generally interesting game, I just wish it had more unfolding/incrementalism in character power. Feels like the progression is really slow and I don't necessarily understand how the game wants me to play.

Got bored somewhere around the seventeenth impossibly-archetected mansion.
...or it seemed like the seventeenth one, at least.

Also the "job system" you eventually get to use is intentionally crippled for no good reason.

Mix bag on it, but I generally lean on the "it's good" side. The gameplay is fun and engaging and the graphics is some of the best for a pixelized game of its kind. With that said, yeah the stories being disconnected and your party members rarely talk to each other is a BIG missed opportunity.

Generally my thoughts on it too. I got about halfway through and couldn't finish it. I don't like how formulaic it is, how disconnected the stories are, and how there's really nothing compelling to make me want to keep playing it

Like most others, I have mixed opinions on the game.

I'm about 34 hours into my second attempted play through (gave up the first time around since I didn't "get" the game, and restarted with a better main). The game is not a page turner with an interesting story and the dungeon formula is very repetitive for something it asks you to do at least 32 times.

I think this game is best enjoyed it "episodic" spurts. The stories are simple enough that the short recaps at the becoming of each chapter is usually enough to reorient yourself. So for me, it's more about enjoying a short RPG episode once in a while for couple of hours, where I see a little story take place as its own unit, and I don't get exhausted with the game play.

I've also gathered you can be a few levels behind with your average level compared to the recommended, especially if you can carry yourself with your unswappable character who should be well over leveled. If you're a couple levels above an area level, exp will essentially stall to 0. So it is more efficient to grind levels in higher level areas since you will basically always need to engage with the weakness system on enemies that give you an ounce of exp.

It's a solid game, but one I recommend you play slowly over time once you get the full party.

Another example of the game stubbornly clinging to idealism, really. You're doing all eight stories anyway, why force me to keep that first one around at all times.

See, you know what's strange with me, I got the game when it first came out. Put several hours into it, then stopped. I remember being frustrated. Then recently I wanted to check it out again so I played the demo (I had sold the game before, I was so over it). Then played through the demo again and liked it. I went to go see how much it was and was surprised to find it on sale for 3 more days on eShop for $41.99!

His point is that the MC lock is pointless (which it is). It's an inconvenience to party composition for both game play and path actions for no real reason.

The very structure of the game is that there is no MC, just someone you picked first. The game needed another round of alleged "feedback" to clean up 1st-pick lock, the badly-implemented job system, and a couple other things I forgot I didn't like.

I actually don't mind the job system, it's one of the better parts of this game. Mixing a sub class with your main class gives the game a lot of room for experimentation. Sure it does revolve grinding, but with 8 stories to go through it just kind of comes naturally.

But yeah locking the first pick was a really dumb choice. There's almost no reason to not have Therion in your party at all times because he's the only one who can open those purple chests, then there''s Primrose who yes can technically bring on an end game partner, but they're only normally good for like 3-4 use before they "run away". She's kind of pointless to keep on at all times because of that.

The job system is equipable items, rather than let me just run eight "dancers" or something. Something I gotta swap around, instead of just a "oh you unlocked 'merchant' subclass now!" is more idealistic garbage getting in the way of the game.

It's also nice to mix passive skills.

But it's true that the main benefit is weakness coverage (imo).

Which is less nice when you're playing hot-potato with the subclass item.
Grind, give it someone else, grind some more, and repeat all over again when you get another one. All that really changes is hot-potatoing three or four at once, depending on whether that character you can't bench doesn't overlap.

What? JP is independent of your equipped job. You only need to switch to buy the skills if you're going for specific ones. Unless that's what you're complaining about here, which is understandable.

i.e. you don't need to be a dancer to get JP to buy dancer skills.

The big thing that I see about the game is it really doesn't feel like there's a lot of power progression, and gear is SO expensive, you basically need tressa in your main party for the extra income passive.

Yeah this game leans heavily on gear rather than levels, so you can technically cheat by having therion steal all the late game items early by save scumming or restarting the game. Another reason to always have Therion on your team.
