...the approval would designate the Mercedez system as capable of Level 3 autonomy which, among other things, means drivers can use the system without keeping their hands on the wheels. Thats significantly different from Teslas more well-known Level 2 systems which still require hands on the steering wheel and the drivers eyes looking towards the road (though theres no shortage of drivers playing it loose with these guidelines already).

Man where's my old post saying that Benz, Porsche, Audi, etc. would beat Tesla to actual self driving AND still make cars with good quality control? Musk better transition to building impractical submarines.

Tesla's system wasn't even totally approved for its current use case by their original partner Mobile Eye(https://electrek.co/2016/09/15/tesla-vision-mobileye-tesla-autopilot/), and they fell out so Tesla made their own janky system. Now to disappear before the resident Tesla goon shows up.

I don't. As someone who drives for their job, I'd love to take naps during those long drives from one stop to another. I could even read more books with that kind of time

What if it drives you off a bridge? What if a hacker got in to teslas system and made hundreds of people crash? What if it hits a kid, and you have to live with that guilt the rest of your life?

Mass self driving cars won't be made by Tesla, but by reputable companies who focus on safety. Tesla still can't even make that many cars.

Yeah, they have limited mapped auto drive where you don't need to pay attention. Still the most advanced tech for it. And for all your statements about hating Elon Musk, all you seem to do is show up in these topics to slurp Tesla.

It says that applying to be certified for these meaningless levels of autonomy is a waste of time and only done by a company starved for headlines.

Tesla doesn't care about certification to drive only 30 mph on tiny mapped strip of road. If Tesla did, you'd be rightfully crying about it being a gimmick.

There's nothing advanced about reinventing rails. You're falling into Elon fanboy logic.

Look in any topic about Elon and I'm shitting on him. I just don't need to slurp legacy auto or not understand Tesla's position to hate him.

None of them are anywhere close to being truly road ready. Their ability to operate in ideal conditions does not give me confidence that you could take one down a poorly maintained road, or in heavy rain, or when snow is partially obscuring a sensor, or when there's glare from weird angles there are just too many conditions that you can expect in regular operations that these autonomy systems are just in no way ready for. And that doesn't even get into how badly performance drops if a single sensor starts malfunctioning as the cars get older.

Agreed, this is where I'm at.

Mapping a handful of tiny specific sections of road and relying on it to be kept pristine with a ton of crappy LiDAR sensors is a gimmicky dead end. Legacy automakers aren't tech/AI companies so they're forced to pretend they're working on self driving.

Mercedes panic mapped a road to drive 30mph on because Giga Berlin just opened in their backyard sucking up all the talent. We're not anywhere close to something I'd trust.

Tesla and Apple are the only ones even trying to solve this by going pure vision based AI. No gimmicks, no bs sensors and mapped rails. But I don't see it being solved for a very long time.

why does everyone always act like people won't adapt to new technology.

"oh my god i'm so scared of self driving cars" is equivalent to people being afraid of riding a motorized vehicle when they were first invented. "give people control of wheels? well they'll just drive themselves off of a bridge!"

bring on the automation, as soon as possible, please.

You best start believin' in "legacy automaker destroys Tesla" tabloid pogo topics. You're in one.

All this clickbaity misinformation funnels rightful Elon hate into love for legacy companies that for decades destroyed the planet, US infrastructure, and lead poisoned entire generations. With all the valid reasons to hate Tesla, the constant basis being some flimsy lie propping up a stale legacy automaker is annoying.

I do own Tesla stock. I bought it for $30 a share in 2019 while you guys laughed and said Tesla would go bankrupt because of panel gaps and CNBC said so. I understood the position of power Tesla was building for a decade in spite of my hatred for Elon.
