Being friends with someone who saw your identity as such a major threat that he attempted to have the foundational documents of your country altered to specifically bar you from receiving equal rights goes a bit beyond "being friends with whole who don't share the same belief as me"

The fact that she is, and that literally no one is surprised about it, tells you all you need to know about the legitimacy of our politicians. It's basically assumed that he did it because the people donating to his campaigns wanted him to, not that he had any strong convictions (about anything) one way or the other.
