You could tell who the jokers in this topic are. If you weren't there for Spider-Man 1 or 2 at the ground floor, you don't know what the f*** you're talking about.

I was there. I saw all three of the Raimi movies in theaters. They were awesome for their time (awful Venom notwithstanding) but even for its time there was a lot of cheese and ridiculousness. There are great scenes and there are silly, unnecessary scenes. They balance into a good movie, but not the pinnacle of the genre by any means.

The tentacle massacre with the surgeons has to be one of the most beloved and yet silliest scenes in any comic book movie.

The genre was still pretty weak by 2002. Spider-Man 1 or 2 are immediately top 5 comic book movies at that point. Superman 1 and 2, Batman, and X2 are in the running at this point. And Batman isn't even that good beyond the aesthetic.

(And in saying this, yes, I worship the Burton movies still).

I love Spider-Man 2 and actually just watched it less than a month ago. With that being said there are several MCU movies that top it IMO.

Infinity War/Endgame are better for sure.

I just finished watching Spider-Man 2 (because I'm also rewatching the entire franchise before NWH), and while it's still one of my favorite movies...I think the reason why it works so much better than most other MCU movies is because Peter Parker/Spider-Man is probably the most interesting superhero out there. So naturally his movies are gonna be more interesting.

And I think people like the original Spider-Man movies more as a character study of him over the MCU Spidey movies because that's not really what MCU movies are about. We all already know about Parker Luck and how tragic Peter's life is, the MCU movies are more about Spider-Man in a world where superheroes are everywhere and where he fits into that hierarchy. I wouldn't either franchise is better or worse, they're just different looks at his character.

Yeah with those old movies, look at how much of the drama is squarely on the characters rather than the 30 minute CGI 3rd acts. That s*** is annoying. People were praising Shang-Chi and I am sitting here dumbfounded.

I'm sure its already been said, but Winter Soldier and Civil war are easily the 2 best in the MCU

My faves are probably Iron Man 1 and Winter Soldier.

It's the best Spider-Man movie, and definitely better than a good chunk of the MCU.

The hospital scene wasnt silly but it did have a hint of silliness. But thats just Raimis style. Just look at the Evil Dead movies, he really goes over the top.

Spider Man 2 was good for its time but I don't think it holds up anymore.

I watched it a few weeks ago and I enjoyed it. However, I definitely didn't look at it as one of the top tier comic book movies

So, Spider-Man 2 does a lot of things right. It has some very, very poignant moments. My favorite from this movie in particular is Aunt May's talk about heroes. It's meaningful, even outside of the realm of comic books. There's a hero in all of us.

Then there's absolutely cornball shit like the scene of the passengers standing up for Spider-Man on the train, which is basically just a rehash of "you mess with one of us you mess with all of us" from the first movie, which was cheesy then, too. Even though it's kind of played as a joke in SM2, it's still corny shit.

The dialogue in general is either very strong or very stupid, with barely any room in between. I also always thought it was extremely dumb that the robotic arms had the capacity to mind control Octavius. Like, bro, what? Why? It's such an outlandish concept that the whole thing just seems like a wink-wink nudge-nudge at the audience, like Raimi's saying "lol, aren't comic books silly as shit?"

I dunno. Raimi's Spider-Man movies always walked the line between genuinely inspiring and hopelessly cheeseball, and SM2 might lean a little bit more toward the former but still has a ton of the latter.

Winter Soldier is overrated.

True. Spider-Man was about Spider-Man characters alone. The MCU is all about telling an expansive story mashing a bunch of heroes together. If it didnt have other MCU characters past the 1st movie or so what is the point this far in of having it in the MCU at all?

That doesnt invalidate well made criticisms of Peters character but it does need to be appreciated that its a different focus and that they likely did not want to rehash a trilogy that wasnt even a decade old by the time of Homecomings release.

Tobeyman is literally a 30 year old in high school with borderline creep/stalker tendencies. No wonder a bunch of guys here prefer him

Just got done rewatching SM2 about 2 days ago. It's an excellent movie. I still think there's a few MCU movies that surpass it

Ok the nerds know that Blade was first but Spider-Man was the seismic shift that the genre hasn't had in a long time.
