MC's been on classic rock stations for years and years. I guess that's your answer.

Classic rock is a radio format, not a genre in the regular sense. It started playing music, specifically rock, from 30+ years previous. Take 30+ years away from now and you get 80s/90s bands. Won't be long before the aughts take a bigger percentage.

1985 was 19 years prior to the release of the bowling for song, so a comparable release today would be called 2002

So fun fact about this song: it's actually a cover from a band called SR-71. There's a Todd in the Shadows video about the band and their one hit wonder Right Now:

https://youtu.be/BBVE39YesHU

Said band is also behind a song raging against political correctness, going as far as to say "You couldn't make a Mel Brooks movie today / I watched Blazing Saddles yesterday" as like a jab against the moral police or whatever. Basically just teenage edgelord stuff, which was their demographic from the sounds of things.

Skip to 12:08 to hear snippets of the original song. What's notable is that the line in the Bowling for Soup version, "even St. Elmo's Fire", was originally "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" which fits way better into the rhyming scheme of the song.
