because even though gamers are a huge multi-billion revenue community... most of them have no friends and wont want to go to a cinema alone.

No, but it didnt gross that much either.

You'd never see video game movies gross revenue to the likes of other blockbusters. The cap seems to be around 500 mil max

lol that's not why. it's cuz the people who get chosen to make the videogame movies aren't gamers and have no idea what it is about the games that people like and would want to see in a movie.

Blame the critics for deciding to s*** on every video game movie they dont understand
Detective Pikachu is the closest we got to a well received movie and that movie only hit about 430 mil. And this is Pokemon we're talking about lol

The people who make them generally arent gamers and they try putting their own spin on the story or doing something different instead of just copying it and adding on to it if need be. How else can they take credit?

It's because games suck as a narrative medium outside of their ability to allow interaction with the story, an ability which is completely absent from movies. Video game stories are mostly bad, but interaction elevates them.

How do you know they aren't? Also how the hell else do you expect them to make a movie out of a GAME where the story isnt direct? Not saying the upcoming Halo tv show will be like this but you wanna watch a movie of Master Chief blasting Convenant repeatedly in the face for 2 hours straight or something?

That's actually what sparked this topic. Sonic was actually a good movie IMO and yet it only grossed 300 mil and there always seem to be 30% of RT movie critics that will just freaking s***t on every video game movie regardless because they never played a video game in their life

I always wondered...why do video game movie topics fail? Then I finally realized why..

because even though gamers can often be the intelligent sort...many of them can't see the obvious lack of quality smacking them in the face, and will come up with some other lame excuse as to why these movies suck.

duh.

I've played plenty of games.

There isn't a single good film based on them, IMO.

It's not just about whether or not somebody is a gamer.

There may be some films that have gaming fans that don't know how to write, but the Dragonball and Tekken live action film writers can't have been casual fans of either franchise.

Yeah, sorry, but I don't think they're good.

Are they as shit as some of the others? No. I'd put them on the same sort of level as Silent Hill, which is to say they're better than most films based on games, but still poor.

Every director wants to put their 'creative spin' on the project. It's how directors are directors. In the movie industry, if a director only follows the source material and is super faithful then he is a 'creative cuck'.

That's what I assume anyway. Just look at resident evil. They have to change the fuck out of everything.

As you can see, people dont even know what the heck they want from a video game movie, yet they're ever so unhesitating and ready to jump onto any criticism when one is made.

It's impossible to make a movie based accurately on a video game, but the moment any movie puts a creative aspect to the game...

Sonic did well enough that they're developing a sequel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5kzUpWAusI

And it has Idris Elba as Knuckles. Production was probably way more efficient since they didn't have to completely redo Sonic's model this time.

I'm not sure that a good Sonic movie is even possible, if I'm completely honest.

As far as Pokemon goes, I haven't really cared since Gen 1 so I'm not the person to ask.

I would say that your question seems based on the suggestion that a movie based on Sonic or Pokemon is even a desirable thing.

There are other franchises that could have good films made about them in theory, but never have. I'd suggest that something like Resident Evil, which has produced a slew of shit films, actually has some potential for film adaptation. I'm not sure that potential will ever be realised though.

Because we can suspend a lot of disbelief when we're playing a game because it's fun. Not so much with movies, losing that interactivity really makes it easier and justifiable to say "uh, this is kind of stupid..."

Also compressing several hours worth of content down to 90-120 minutes tops (20-30 of which are always wasted on forced romance subplot) is damn hard to pull off

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Thank you. I say this from my personal experience as well.

1. It's really damn hard to find gamer friends to go to the cinema with, unless anyone can attest to otherwise. If hardcore real life gaming friends were such a thing, then why do less and less video games have split screen support nowadays?

2. Another reason I admit, can partially be due to video games being harder to adapt. Because there is no concise story in a video game, fans have different interpretations of what would be quality enough.

3. Third reason is that video games that are adapted tend to be from violent genres. And a lot of the times, these unknown titles are dismissed by movie critics, most of whom dont even play video games, as yet another 'generic action flick'. I remember seeing some occurrences like this before. A game site like IGN gives the movie a good score but then some mainstream outlet like Chicago Times gives the movie a bad score and by reading the review you can tell the critic has never played the original game to begin with.

The problem is that gamers are used to paying less than a dollar per hour of entertainment. And for a movie they have to spend like 10 per hour. So it seems like a rip-off.
