I've been playing through the game right now for the 10th-ish time. It's one of my all time favorite games, and is still my favorite game in the series. I'm a little drunk right now and feeling especially passionate about this game, so fuck it: here's my ranking of all the worlds in the OG Kingdom Hearts, with a brief explanation of why I placed each one where I did. Some of these are gonna be controversial: I'm ok with that.

13.Monstro
This is genuinely one of my least favorite levels in any video game ever. It's ugly, it's frustrating, it has a shitty, boring boss fight. While it has plot importance, it's only real contribution is seeing Riku be a dick to Sora, which we've already seen throughout the game by that point. There's genuinely nothing redeeming about this world. Fuck Monstro.

12.Deep Jungle
I've always wanted to like Deep Jungle, as Tarzan is one of my favorite Disney movies. And in the game, Tarzan is one of the more capable Disney character party members. That said though, Deep Jungle is a mess. Even in the 1.5 etc. remasters, vine swinging isn't fun. The weird pattern/sequencing of triggering cut-scenes from entering/exiting the various locations still throws me off even after several play-throughs. The Clayton/Chameleon boss fight is pretty forgettable. The tree surfing mini-game is tedious at best, and there's really no reason to ever do it outside of trying to 100% the game. A lot of the individual areas do look pretty, but it's not enough to save it from it's weird formatting and annoying af mini-games.

11.Neverland
How are you gonna have a world called Neverland and then just have you be stuck inside a boat the entire level? This is where you get the glide ability, arguably one of the most important unlockable skills in the game, yet 90% of the world is locked inside super tight boat hallways. It's a really big missed opportunity IMO. The Captain Hook boss fight is solid, and the Shadow Sora mini-boss is decent enough, but they're not nearly enough to safe this world from it's very literal constrictions.

10.Wonderland
There's a lot to like about this world. It's a pretty faithful adaptation of its Disney source material, it has a lot of secret hidden stuff that you have to do wacky things to get, the Upside Down room in particular is a lot of fun, and all of the little nods to the source material are very enjoyable. All that said, this world feels so small, to a detriment. There's only a small handful of explorable rooms, most of them just being different versions/perspectives of the same "Bizarre room". The card army mini-boss is very lackluster, and The Trickster boss fight is very tame and boring all things considered. While I like how it incorporates the table and chair in the Bizarre Room, otherwise it's a very standard "Big Heartless" boring boss fight, and just doesn't stand out. And I think as a whole, that's Wonderland's biggest crime. Despite it being literally Wonderland, it doesn't stand out. It's a very middle of the road world, and given that it's going to be most player's first Disney world in the game, that's a big crime.

9.Destiny Island
Destiny Island is a solid tutorial level. And... That's about it. It only has 2 main explorable ares (technically 3 I guess with the Secret Cave, but that barely counts IMO). It's really only important for its plot significance, which is also really the only reason its as high as it is. It serves its purpose, introduces you to the base game mechanics and the game's main characters, and... that's about it. But it's not really trying to be more than that, nor does it need to. It's fine for what it is.

8.Atlantica
Alright, hear me out. I know Atlantica would be at the very bottom of most people's lists. But I honestly don't mind Atlantica. Can the swimming mechanic frustrate people? Sure, I can see that. But it's really not all that different from the flying mechanic in Neverland, which doesn't get NEARLY as much hate as Atlantica does. Atlantica has some very pretty level designs, 2 unique (even if somewhat frustrating) boss fights, a very solid Disney companion in Ariel, and is overall just a fun time IMO. I've played Kingdom Hearts on the OG PS2, on PS3, Xbox, and PS5. I've never minded Atlantica in any version of the game. It's a fine level. Not amazing, but not nearly as terrible as people try to make it out to be.

7.Agrabah
Agrabah could be a great level: If it was just The Cave of Wonders. The Cave has a ton of secrets to unlock and explore, both Jafar boss fights are great, and it overall just has an excellent design. But unfortunately, then you also have The Streets of Agrabah, which are boring, needlessly convoluted with the gate-opening mechanic, the jar-caterpillar-beetle-whatever mini-boss is frustrating and straight up not fun, and it's just a slog to get through. Agrabah doesn't get good until the Cave of Wonders mini-boss, which is also one of my all time favorite moments in the game period. Agrabah has half of an amazing level. Too bad the other half is boring and mediocre at best.

6.End Of The World
It's a pretty standard end-of-game level, complete with a segment that backtracks to all the other worlds you've visited prior, but it does these things well all things considered. The final boss is included here, but even outside of that, it has Chernabog, one of my favorite bosses in the entire series. It's a very solid end-of-game culmination level, and does everything it needs to. I guess the only downside is that because of that, it tends to lack its own identity as a world, but that's also kind of the point, so meh.

5.Halloween Town
This world is a blast. I love the design of it, it has a lot of cool secrets and unlockables. Oogie Boogie is a very unique and fun boss fight. Lock, Shock, and Barrel are a solid, albeit straightforward mini-boss. The costumes that Sora and Crew get are some of my favorites in the series. Jack's a very capable Party member and a good Donald replacement if you're sick of his ass (I often am). The OG version of Halloween Town has a couple of issues, including a permanently miss-able Trinity spot in Oogie Boogie's Manor, but they fixed it in later versions of the game, so I can't really hold that against it. Overall, it's just a really creative, fun world, and I'm glad it got included.

4.Olympus Coliseum
Probably the most iconic Disney world in the franchise, and the world you're most prompted to revisit (outside of possibly Traverse Town). It's literally just 3 areas, only one of which really mattering, but despite that, it's a fantastic world. What it lacks in exploration, it makes up for in its battles. Cerberus, Cloud, Hades, Hercules, the Titans, fucking Sephiroth, they're all fought here, and it's fucking fantastic. KH2 made the mistake of trying to expand on this world with The Underworld, and while I get why, I feel like they really missed why people loved the Coliseum so much to begin with. It's simple, but effective. You're there to fight awesome bosses, and that's it. You don't need anything extra.

3.100 Acre Wood
It's a glorified mini-game level, but man, it's so much fucking fun. My Winnie The Pooh bias might be chiming in here, but this world is just so damn charming. Most of the mini-games are a lot of fun, and it's a really good change of pace from the rest of the game's melodrama. You're just having fun with Pooh and friends, not worrying about all the Heartless shit. It's great. As a kid I would instantly drop anything else I was doing in the game the second I got a Torn Page to rush back and play the next mini-game. It's a ton of fun, and despite not being required to beat the game, is one of my favorite parts.

2.Traverse Town
This world really sets the tone for the rest of the game, in the best possible way. There's so much to explore and unlock here, and it's incredible. It serves as your central hub for the game, and is your main liaison to the Final Fantasy element of the game, tying these characters in surprisingly naturally and smoothly. Gaurd Armor is the only real boss fight here, and while it is just another "big bad Heartless" boss, it's rather iconic in its own right. Everything ties back to Traverse Town, and it's such a well made world that I don't mind that in the slightest. I almost made it my #1 world, but that had to go to...

1.Hollow Bastion
Sure, it's the obvious choice. But Hallow Bastion really is something special. Its scale, its design, its ingenuity, SEVERAL of the best boss fights in the game. Beast is a great Companion character, there's a plethora of secrets to unlock, and areas to explore. You can't beat Hallow Bastion. You just can't. The entire plot builds up to this world, and it delivers, and then some.

That's exactly why I'll never understand the people that say 2 is better than 1. 1 had more depth and exploration in its levels , while 2, despite being a bigger, "grander" game, the worlds felt so much more shallow. I'd take even Deep Jungle over several of the worlds in KH2.

I just finished 2 and it's obvious to me that they decided to focus on the gameplay over the exploration

Which I'm perfectly fine with: the combat in 2 is the second best combat I've ever experienced in a video game

In my experience, most people who prefer KH2 are perfectly willing to admit that the world design in 2 is pretty bad in comparison. It's viewed as an unfortunate blemish or a sad but reasonable trade off for what it offers in return.

It's such a steep decline in world quality though, it;s almost baffling. KH2 has a lot of great elements, but I know that for me at least, what really drew me into the original Kingdom Hearts was the worlds themselves. All of the subsequent games really seemed to lose that though, and it always really disaapointed me. There's a reason I've beaten KH1 9ish times and KH2 only twice.

That honestly also may be part of why I never minded Atlantica: I almost always play a magic heavy build, so it never became an issue when I got to Atlantica.

It all comes down to personal preference, but I'll take KH1's weaker gameplay with its better worlds over KH2's inverse any day. But I guess it really just boils down to what you're after in a game.

Monstro is def the worst level, always hated it.

I always liked neverland but thats more for the fly/glide aspect which I thought was so freakin cool as a kid. Looking back yea its pretty small, but the ship exterior and the clock tower were fun simply for the openness of it all. The reaper fight was a lot of fun too.

Aladdin was my favorite of the featured movies so I was always partial to it, but Agrabah streets were pretty bland. Unfortunately they reuse it for a few of the other games with very little updates. The cave of wonders is cool for sure and still hits me in the nostalgia.

End of the world was appropriately epic, no complaints.

I'm probably one of the few that doesn't care for halloweentown, I never liked the movie, art style and atmosphere so it was never enjoyable for me. I did like the costume design for the gang though.

Coliseum is great for the epic fights, not much else though. I liked the expanded world in KH3 more tbh. Hercules was up there with Aladdin for me so exploring more of the area hits the same nostalgia buttons.

Loved 100 acre woods as a kid, I grew up watching pooh so it was always a joy to get a new page and go do the mini games. As an adult it interests me much less lol. The nostalgia isn't enough to make me like it at this point.

Traverse town and hollow bastion were great, don't feel the need to add anything on those worlds.

My favorite world would probably be neverland.

See, and those are the best 2 areas of the game, but it's such a small portion of the world and it feels really disappointing to me. But to each their own.

The list is a weird one, but youve got a pretty solid top two. I do think Atlantica is worse than you listed it, and I think Deep Jungle is better. Ill definitely say that there is weird backtracking, but I dont think its that bad tbh.

Though I said its a weird list, I might have been exaggerating. I dont think Ive ever really tried to rank the worlds beyond my favorite and least favorite. KH1 is so good but somehow the worlds are also kinda bad-ish for a good portion.

I think the same is true for The World That Never Was. The opening is incredibly unsettling in that Blade Runner noir kind of way, the music helping enhance that. When you enter the base it loses that noir feel, but it replaces it with deep uneasiness that every step you take is monitored and could be where a trap is sprung.

End of the World is great, but I definitely prefer the sense of man-made decrepitness and paranoia rather than a natural waste land of decay.

1 is def better than 2, but 2 does have the better gameplay obv. It's honestly still the best gameplay in the series to this day.

TC's opening list is also pretty good, though I'd place Winnie the Pooh lower at 7 or 6 since I don't care for minigames. Though I do love Pooh Bear and the whole vibe of the place -- super nostalgia-evoking, reminds me of watching the cartoon as a kid. Super hurt by how they did his world dirty in KH3.

My issue with TWTNW is that Organization 13's threat level and mystique had pretty much INSTANTLY diminished once Sora's story started up. That scene where they all appear in Hollow Bastion to do a collective anime villain taunt + cackle pretty much ruined them for the rest of the series for me lol. Nothing will top the "Oh shit" factor of meeting/fighting Unknown in KH1.

So while the area and aesthetic of TWTNW was pretty cool, Sora and co felt like an unstoppable force storming the place.
