I was already boycotting in solidarity with the striking workers. I guess it'll go on indefinitely.

Does it say what was offered in the proposal? I haven't seen the list but I saw striking workers on Facebook and Twitter saying it was insulting.

A big sticking point has been Kellogg's insisting on keeping its two-tier system in the new contract

Yeah. Not really sure what the end goal is here. Plus they could be letting go tons of experience on top of all of this.

Seems like they are just being really stubborn about this and will still have to change anyway.

Likely not. Most, if not all, US states are at-will employment meaning you can be fired for any reason.

There are things employers can't fire you for, but it's not like they need to list the reason when they fire you making any case against illegal firings hard to prove.

Not in this case. According to the article the union rejected 19 contracts and there are clauses in union law that states that after a certain number of good faith attempts accompanies allowed to just replace the workers. They can't fire the workers during negotiations, they can't retaliate on the workers after, and if they do put in temporary workers they need to guarantee the positions of any Union member that's striking during negotiation.

However, if they fail to ratify a contract at all at that point the company is allowed to fire them.

Edit: a correction, they had 19 negotiating sessions but I don't know how many contracts were actually voted on. Either way, the rest of my statement above I believe still applies.

Another garbage conservative talking point regarding work. If automation was cost effective for them already, then they would have already implemented it and gotten rid of the workers. It's not, and they won't. Companies aren't crying about "nO oNe WaNtS tO wOrK" because they can easily replace their employees.

Here's the key. None of them have been in good faith. Unfortunately they can probably still claim it in court.

The only huge loss is Cheez Its. I've been wanting them but I can't support Kelloggs

And so when people are out of work because the robots took the jobs who will purchase the goods?

Like I'm not disagreeing with the core of the argument, automation of huge swathes of the workforce is a thing that will absolutely happen once the technology is good enough and affordable. But the issue that capitalists have yet to answer is that if huge chunks of the populace are without gainful employment then how will they afford to purchase the good and services that our robot overlords are producing? Do we end up like Earth in The Expanse series? Where most people just live on some sort of government provided basic income?

Thats a good question. The government eventually will have to poor use a basic monthly allowance. Or I guess we will just lose the lower middle class and under.

LOL, I remember the articles 10 years ago talking about the amazing burger making machines that'd replace all fast food fry cooks. Now during the pandemic these same places are crying about worker shortages. If automation was so quick and easy, why haven't they done it ten years after articles talked about these kinds of robots.

It's just not possible at this time without a massive overhaul and that's on top of the workforce that would be needed to maintain said robots. None of us are going to see true automation in our lifetimes

I think you guys dont have an understanding of what it will really be like. Of course it will never be 100 percent. But the positions will be extremely limited and resort to basically mechanically based jobs. My grocery store got rid of all its cashiers, greeters, theres only 1 employee by self checkout and the rest are stockers. Fast food places are becoming the same

I think it should be noted that prior to the strike, Kellogg's was working these people 80 hour weeks
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/cereal-killers-80-hour-weeks-123043469.html

It seems to me that if Kellogg's could automate their labor or simply hire more workers instead of paying so much overtime, they would have done so.

Why are you pretending not to know this exact same crap has been happening for well over a century now?

New Jobs become available and or people just adapt and find other work. And thanks to automation now said goods become cheaper then ever to produce, which lowers the cost for consumers.

I don't when BS is sprouted enough people start to believe it without question. But this particular one is just sad.

Eventually, we are going to run out of unskilled/low-skilled jobs if we automate. And even if the autonomous robots need so much babysitting that we need as many workers as we currently have (which defeats the purpose), you simply aren't going to have an entire populace that can do the work.
